I have a 2006 Camry with 166, 000 miles on and have changed the oil every 5,000 miles and used Castrol 5w30 oil since I bought it with 14, 000 miles on. About a year ago I had to add a quart to an oil change and now I have added 2 quart and still have a 1000 miles until the next oil change. This car has been flawless with this exception. Any ideas? Thinking of using 10w30 at the next oil change. Anyone out there with a 2006 2.4 with similar issue?

One quart per 2k miles is more than you might like but it is common by 140k miles....I'm at about the same consumption level now....
1st thing I did was add HM 5w-30 to stop the small drip from a seal and after 3k miles that seems to have worked....
I still needed to add a quart @ 2k miles. I will again add another quart @ 4k, and go to 6k before the next OC....I'm okay with that, considering the alternative.....oil's cheap.

So is the 06 Camry not in that class of years where they used excessive oil? Most postings I have seen seem to start with 2007.
What do you think about switching to 10w30?

Really disappointed in the oil consumption. I had a 92 Corolla with over 300k that only used a quart to 3k miles. Also had a 94 626 with 200k that I did not add oil to in 3k miles. The Camry has been great otherwise. Sort of cools me on buying another one!

Change the PCV and use a high mileage oil.

Beside having an engine that is simply worn out, maybe its just varnished or sludged up. Shorten the oil change interval if sticking with conventional. Or, switch to a synthetic oil.

Look what happens when you switch from synthetic to conventional:

http://www.auto-rx.com/ or http://www.lubegard.com/~/C-180/LUBEGARD+BIO-TECH+Engine+Oil+Protectant can condition the seals and maybe do a little ring cleaning.

Another option is to trade it in for a 300k mile Corolla that doesn't burn oil.

It seems that the newer cars, maybe after the mid 2000's, use more oil then previous generations.
Another thought is maybe your engine had unusual wear during its first 14,000 miles.

At any rate, hopefully you get another 100,000 miles before needing to replace it.

I bought an 04 camry new with the 2.4 engine. Changed oil and filter every 2.5k (toyota filters and drain plug gaskets and castrol gtx oil). At 101k the engine started each morning with a slight puff of smoke out the tail pipe , yep valve seals. The dealer said if the engine was made in the USA the valve seals would go out about 100k if it was made in Japan 300k. Also if they removed the head to rebuild it there was a good possibility it would lose some head bolt threads due to the design of the engine. They could repair up to 3 pulled threads but if it lost 4 or more I would need to install a long block. I traded it in on a 2014. That was real disappointment.

The 2AZ design fixed the oil leak from the valve cover compared to the 5S which slanted backwards, but toyota messed up on the headbolts and the oil consumption lol.

My 04 2AZ appears to be consuming oil (not leaking) as well. It's enough for me to go through a 3K OCI (maybe 1.5qt burn). The engine has 164K miles and it was maintained pretty good from the previous owner.

It's not an issue for me since I do check all my fluids on a monthly basis when I was my car. On the side note, my 04 1MZ which I've had for about 55K (got at 52K) does not burn any oil. It does seep a tiny bit from the valve cover, but after 5.6K OCI (longest I've ran it), oil level was still on the 'F' line.

10W30 will not significantly change your oil consumption. I recommend 10W40, and live with the improved (but not perfect) consumption. At this point, it matters little what the cause of your problem is;repair would cost you far more than the slight savings of oil.

So I don't want to think about pulling the head if the valve seals are leaking! I guess Toyota is not so wonderful after all? Where do I check to see if the engine is USA made?

You are so right. I think I will still try the 10W30 oil and some Lube Guard that someone recommended and change the PCV for starters. And until recently I was always saying how good this car has been. The only thing I have done outside of regular maintenance was two wheel alignments. I guest the bill has come due!

I didn't have To add oil between changes ( every 2.5k) my concern was contaminating the catalytic converter and failing the bi-annual smog test. And if I waited any longer the problem might get worse and I wouldn't be able to get anything on a trade. I also have a 97 Corolla purchased new, now has 64k on it. It's gets the same 2.5k oil changes and uses nothing between changes. It has maintained a constant 31 mpg round town and 37-39 freeway. Couldn't be happier with that one.

To find out us or Japanese made is coded into the vin. I just done remember which digit tells you. I called the dealers parts dept, gave them the vin and they told me it was us made. I'm sure they would do the same for you or I'm sure there is an online vin decoding web site..

i love all 3 of my toys...none of 'em burn oil, at least not yet.

Interesting as you have the same Camry I have. Tell me, when you change oil, do you put in 4 qt or 4.5? For me, 4 qt brings the level to the half way mark on the dip stick. How many miles are on your '06 Camry?

My 04 2AZ has 159k on it. I change oil every 5k, Mobil 1 synthetic High Mileage and Mobil 1 filter. After changing each time 4qt puts it a little over the full mark and by the time 5K rolls around it is about 1/8" below the full mark. It will puff a little smoke on start-up. Never had a car that burned as little oil as this one.

chuck, my 06 has got 104k hard miles. 3 of our teenagers learned to drive on and then drove it for years before i finally got it back a few weeks ago. always ensure the fluids changed though when the light tells me to. use 10w/30 to stop the smoke on startup these cars all seem to have and 4 qts exactly, including the filter, does the trick. hard to find the gallons now with all the 5 qt stuff on the market though and i don't bother with the qt bottles as it costs more.
might have to switch to 5w/20 as there's some sort of race/bearing/chain noise in top end at idle, not under a load. was told this could be the SB tensioner so probably has nothing to do with the thicker oil.
