After replacing the starter in my 1991 Corolla, I noticed a cable that was coming off from what I believe is the top of the throttle. It is still attached there, but the other end was just hanging down. As I was looking around to try and find where it was originally put on, I noticed a 2nd cable/hose that was coming from something under the master cylinder, that was also not connected to anything. This one was running up from that over the air intake hose and then back down, near where the first hose was hanging. When i replaced the starter I did remove the air intake hose and air filter box and at the time did not notice them. It was only after putting it back in did i notice that they were not connected to anything. I have spent time trying to find out what these are called or what is below the master cylinder. The cables/hoses themselves are relativley thin and flexible. And at the part that was just hanging is a hole and right inside the cable/hose looks to be some insulation that is a greenish color. Any advice is appreciated.

Any pictures or wire colors?

I know that at least one of them by the brake master cylinder was for some kind of testing at the factory. I can't remember the thread where someone said that.

You didn't mention if you have an 3- or 4-speed auto or manual transmission, or if it's federal or California emissions.

Wires around the throttle could be EGR temperature sensor, throttle position sensor, cold start injector. The first two would put the CEL on if disconnected.

They are vacuum hoses.... BOTH LINES go to the water controlled vacuum valve (called the bimetallica valve in the pic below) check your VACUUM diagram under the hood:

In the image below it looks like your vac lines are broken at the 'bimetallic' valve:

(cont..) ^ This is connected to your water-neck, and both vac lines connect to those 2 ports... when the engine gets hot this valve opens and purges the EVAP system/canister..

Thanks for the help. So it sounds like I am going to need a new valve and new hoses, right? And is this something I am able to do myself?
Get the valve, yes because it's ports are broken. Your hoses should be OK.. look at them closley and you can see the plastic broken off ports are still stuck in the ends of them... pick out the broken pieces from the hose and see if you can re-use the hose.. otherwise vacuum hose is cheap...

Undoo the valve from the waterneck... its tapered thread, seal it with a few wraps of teflon tape and some rtv/silicone/permatex right stuff... then tread it back in... drain the coolant from the radiator beforehand below the level of this valve, otherwise coolant will shoot out... catch the drained coolant in a pan and re-use it when you're all done... :)

There's probably no need for teflon tape or RTV on the threads. Toyota doesn't say to use it.

Even after draining the radiator from the radiator drain valve you will still lose coolant when you unscrew this vacuum valve. You might be able to quickly hold your finger over the hole to prevent a lot of coolant from flowing out then quickly put the new valve in.

After you refill the coolant run the engine until hot with the heater control set to hot and rev it some to force any air bubbles out. Then let it cool and recheck the coolant level at the radiator.
