2000 avalon JBL audio dead

My radio is dead! Didn't just drop out; it went slowly and painfully!

Problem is the display stays on, but the sound will just shut off. Other times it will make a loud bang but kept playing. Now its off for good.
?? Is there an amplifier between the radio and speakers in the 2000 Avalon xls? Or is the whole unit bad?
