2000 Rav4 intermittently running hot

My 2000 Rav4 had been intermittently running hot earlier in the year, so I had the radiator replaced and thought everything was fine.

The running hot has started in again--with a new radiator! The only thing I've noticed for certain is that the gauge starts the upward climb at about 70mph. It goes up to a little way below the red mark, and stays there until/unless I slow down. But since it doesn't happen all the time, it's real puzzling to me.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

If you're real lucky it's just the thermostat. And before it outright dies it's sticking or only opening part of the way. At hi revs the engine runs hotter and since its not open all the way the engine isn't cooling enough. More likely - the water pump is failing. Look for antifreeze leaks under the car.
da_jazzee,

Thanks for the thermostat suggestion, I hadn't thought of that. I haven't noticed any leaks under the car, and I had the water pump replaced at 225,000 when I replaced the engine.

I'll have both the thermostat and water pump checked out!
Did you get it fixed?

Sounds like a thermostat issue and possibly it hasn't been bled correctly and there is still an air bubble in the system.
Unfortunately (cost wise) it turned out to be the water pump. I was hoping for something less expensive, like the thermostat, but no such luck. It's been fine since I had the water pump replaced.
Better than a radiator & attached hoses :) Glad you got it fixed!
