What is the correct idle rpm cold for a 2001 Camry 4 cyl. The following details may be appropriate. Ambient temperature 52 degrees F. Immediately upon starting rpm goes to approximately 1700 rpm in about 5 minutes it will settle at 800. Is this normal?

When its cold, the car automatically raises the rpm's to speed up the warming process, its all normal! I've had rpm's till 2K rpms in cold cold wisconsin winters, that was loud!

For 52 degrees that sounds a little high for much more then a minute. I would check the cooant temp sensor. In really cold weather it might be a little closer to normal. My 04 will start up high but will start dropping after 30 seconds or so.
