2002 with recurrent Engine Malfunction Indicator

Hi...

I bought my used RAV in April and, on July 31st, the Engine Malfunction Indicator went on. On the highway and about to go on a road trip the next day, I pulled right into Can Tire for diagnosis. The verdict was the O2 sensors in front of and behind the catalytic converter. They said "it happens" and that it was not a big deal and not to worry about it on my trip.

Over the last 5 months, it goes on and off at will. I had it diagnosed a second time in September and was again told not to worry about it.

I did some research in the fall and found out that the 2002 RAVS, that came out of a specific plant (identified by a 6 in the VIN if I remember correctly). As I remember it, the problem was with a weld in the exhaust pipe and that this was causing my problems. I had taken a printout of the web page where I found that info but, as luck would have it, I was at work and forgot to pick up the printout. When I went back the next day, the printout was long gone and, unfortunately, all references to that web site were also (and I thought that I bookmarked too many pages). To this day, I have not been able to find that information on-line.

So...my question is...what do you guys know about this? I am planning on calling Toyota to see if there is a campaign on the issue but wanted to see what I could find out from you first. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Thanks.

Holly

yes there is s campaign on it but i think its only 4 3/36k 4got but bring it to ur toyota dealer cause they will need 2 reprogram ur ecu i 4got if the 02 is the newer body style not the 06 ver.
My 2001 RAV4 had the same problem

I brought it to the dealer for repair last week. They reset something in the ECU and charged me $105. I have bought comprehensive warranty but they said it wasn't covered.
Later I found this document:
http://rav4world.com/tsb/EG010-02.pdf
It says this is covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions Warranty (96 months/80,000 miles).
But the dealer said this is applied to American users only.
Does anybody knows the equivalent coverage in Canada?
That is really interesting. I have been completely procrastinating on following up on this. I guess I will wait another few days to see what else we can uncover. Thanks!
did you find anything?

hi Holly,
If you find anything please post it here, thanks!
$105 is not a big deal, but next time they will charge me a few thousand dollars for a new catalyst converter. That hurts!
