Looking at a 2005 4Runner with 40K mis. and maintenance light is on, seller says light may be on as oil change reminder??? Is this true and what other reasons might this light come for? Body is in good condition, interior, however, shown little care, and I always wonder if someone doesn't take care of the interior how did they treat the engine, etc. Thanks for the help.

try this!

Reset Procedure

To reset the Service Maintenance Reminder Light:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

2. Set the Odometer / Trip Display to the "ODO" mode.

3. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.

4. Depress and hold the Trip Meter "RESET" button while turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

5. The Service Maintenance Reminder Light will:

a. Illuminate solidly for 3 seconds.

b. Blink for 2 seconds.

c. Illuminate solidly for 1 second.

d. Turn off.

6. Release the Trip Meter "RESET" button.

7. Turn the ignition to the "OFF" position.

8. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position, and confirm that the Service Maintenance Reminder Light goes out.

NOTE: If the light continues blinking in step 5a, turn the ignition off, and repeat the procedure from step 1.

If the light goes out and comes back on I assume it need service?
If it comes back on then there is a problem - could be as simple as gas cap not sealed or O2 sensor/emissions stuff bad (could be under warranty for that - or could be costly repair). Most states won't pass a vehicle for safety/emissions inspection if the check engine light is on.

Seller said he thought it meant he needed an oil change, sounded fishy will be thoroughly tested by certified Toyota mechanic before we make an offer thanks for the feedback
The "MAINT" light is only a timer for your oil change. It will light up every 5000 miles +/-. You just reset it after every oil change. Now if you have a "Check Engine" light, that could mean trouble of some sort.
