I have a 2005 Corolla S with 104,000 miles on it. I've had it for a year and had no problems out of it. About a month ago, the CEL started coming on randomly. Every time it has come on, it comes on before the engine is even cranked. All the codes have showed 0 rpm at the time the code comes up.

The code is P0442 (EVAP Emission Control System Leak Detected - Small Leak) or P0456 (EVAP Leak - Very Small Leak). They would reset it and it would come back on a week to 2 weeks later, always at 0 rpms.

They ran a smoke test on the EVAP system and found nothing. The car passed emissions inspection.

They found a TSB that seemed directly linked to the issue and they replaced the charcoal canister last week. So there went $250 plus labor.

A week after they replaced the charcoal canister, the CEL came back on. Same thing, 0 rpms. So I took it back, and now they say that it "might" be the computer (ECM?). I'm not a car person. Of course, then they tell me that the computer plus the installation will be $700. The technician knows someone at the Toyota dealer and he was told that they've been changing alot of the computers in the 2005 Corollas.

The car runs perfectly fine and I'm seriously considering putting some electrical tape over the CEL and forgetting about it. Has anyone had a similar issue or have any advice about how to proceed? Used computer are available, but have no warranty.

Did they look at your gas cap and O ring? I assume they tested your gas cap during the emissions testing?

Do you feel like they are just guessing for a new computer? I know the 06 corollas have a weak computer, but not the 05s.
