My 2005 Frontier was a lemon but after winning my lawsuit, I gave Nissan a second chance with a 2006 model. I am having one of the same issues with this new truck as the old one.

After getting it repaired, I am thinking about moving to a Tacoma. I know they cost more but I want something that will last. I need a truck to haul two dirt bikes and pull a Sea Doo. I hear there is a TSB for the tailgate that may need to be performed. Can someone tell me what that is?

Cruising down the highway my Frontier gets 22mpg. How are Tacomas? If I get one I'll get a white access cab 4x4 with 6 speed and V6. I want bigger tires and some sort of off-road package and as I recall, that means a sticker of about $28,000. That is actually pretty close to a new Nismo but Nissan has $2,500 cash back but with my current and past troubles, I may not feel good driving around in another one.

Any input from folks who do light duty hauling with dirt bikes and towing with PWC is appreciated.

tailgate issue has been fixed but i think south of the border you are still having problems with the weak leaf springs. tacomas get similar mpg to that of a frontier sometimes better all depends on tires. you wont see too many ppl around here getting 22mpg cause most ppl here have lifted and put on bigger tires. bitch and complain enough and you'll get your leaf pack fixed. I haven't had any issues with my tacoma neither has my tacoma owning friends or my dad he's is a contractor who hauls a lot of lumber and tools and tows a trailer quite regularly. i think he actually said it town better than his ram did.

You probably won't see 22mpg. I have a DC, otherwise the same as what you want, and I see 18mpg with about 60% highway / 40% city driving. And I am pretty careful with the accelerator ....
As for the reliability, there can be issues with the Tacomas also. Mine was in the shop a total of 25 days or so, with the total cost being like $10K (but all was covered). I have to say though that the last fix was about a year ago, and it's been great since.

I think you would not regret getting a Tacoma. Good luck!

I came from Nissan (05 Altima 3.5SE) and haven't looked back. The Altima was in the shop 4 times in 6 months for various issues, all covered by warranty, but it had to go. I haven't had one problem with the Tacoma in the 5+ months (6K miles) that I've had it. You'll find the large majority of folks haven't had problems. Highway, I've gotten 22mpg, city is more like 17.

Best of luck with your decision. BTW, think about why they're offering that $2500 rebate. It isn't because they're selling well.

I am having one of the same issues Fact #2

I hear there is a TSB for the tailgate that may need to be performed. Can someone tell me what that is? It doesnt need to be performed unless the tailgate is bent from weight lying upon it.

Cruising down the highway my Frontier gets 22mpg. How are Tacomas? 17-21mpg with the v6 depending on how fast you drive and how heavy your foot is when you accelerate.

Any input from folks who do light duty hauling with dirt bikes and towing with PWC is appreciated. The tacoma is very good at this. keep the towing under 6500lbs and the hauling at around 1000lbs (short term). I have as well as many have hauled 2000lbs for short distances and have done well. lots of people haul 500lbs every day for work and do well.

Just listen to yourself....you've answered your own concern! Don't make the same mistake....AGAIN.

Hope that helped you!

I just bought an 08 DC TRD sport and the tailgait TSB had been done already when it was made. Still has the 3 leafs but I can get that taken care of in the future at no cost if I want. I think you'll be happy with the Tacoma. Drive one if you haven't already. I'm impressed with mine!

I average about 17-18 with my current Frontier and drive about the same mileage percentage you do. 22 is on a straight road trip with all highway miles.

When I get my Frontier fixed I'll check out a Taco in person and go from there.

Thanks for all the responses.

I have an 06 DC Prerunner. It's been great other than the weak rear springs (which toyota will be replacing soon for free). It has a 2 1/2" lift and slightly bigger tires (32's) and does pretty good on fuel. Right above 20 mpg on a recent trip across half the state of california. Not bad for between 75-80 mph over all the mountains. Only performance mods are the TRD exhaust and intake. I haven't had any problems in the 20000 miles Ive owned it. I'd definetly buy one again.

I doubt you'll see 22 mpg on the hwy with the 6-speed manual. The 4.0L gets better MPG with the auto transmission in these trucks. If you get the 5-speed auto, 22 MPG highway is very obtainable. I have a 4.0L w/ auto and typically get 18-19 around town and 21-23 on the highway.

Towing and payload should be pretty much identical to your Frontier.

Also, I bought my 2006 Tacoma (Access cab, 4.0L, automatic, 4wd, TRD-Sport package) for just over $26,000 brand new....the sticker price on it was over $29,000. You can get some good deals on Tacomas - you just have to look around and stick to your guns when you negotiate on price.

For me, 14-city 16-highway is what I get. 120 miles a day all highway and averaging 16mpg. Love my truck...just not the mpg

Best overall advice I can give is: Don't buy for MPG. Gas prices always rise and fall but (IMO) it's more important to drive something you enjoy and is of good quality.

I'm getting about the same gas milage on my '08 6 speed Taco that I did with my '05 auto. I avg 22mpg's strictly hwy and 16-17 if it's all city. I looked @ the Frontier when I traded my '05, but didn't see anything about it that would be enough to make me switch. I've had no major issues w/ either truck. I tow a 3K+ lbs trailer for work on a regular basis w/ no problems. BTW I paid 27K for my '08 TRD O/R DC V6. You won't regret buying a Toyota. I haven't.

was the problem the rear diff.. since it tends to blow out when under heavy loads and they just replace it with the same one.. not even a rebuilted or better designed one.. also the Titan uses the same small ass rear diff as a Frontier.. how sad lol
