So I just wanted some opinions on 5w-30 oil for the 2azfe 2007 Camry. I know this year Camry calls for 0w-20 or 5w-20 in the Manuel and it states it on the oil cap. However, I have the oil burning problem for this year engine. I decided to start topping it off with 5w-30 high milage and next time I’ll do the oil change completely 5w-30. My theory is this could help with the oil burning issue since it is heavier oil? I maintain my car pretty well. Doing regular oil change intervals every 5,000 miles or less. As well as doing other regular maintenance. I just reached 180,000 miles. Thoughts and opinions ?

How bad is your oil consumption?

changing from a nW-20 to a nW-30 weight will likely have negligible effects in your fuel mileage unless you keep meticulous notes on every fillup.

That second number of the oil weight refers to the equivalent weight that the oil seems to have when it is at high temperatures; the first number is the low temperature equivalent weight when compared to a single weight oil.

The Toyota expert mechanic with the videos, the car care nut, even mentioned running a thicker oil in older high mileage cars as a good thing.

It does burn a lot of oil. I took notes and it burned from the top oil level line down to the middle of the top and bottom oil level. . I went to LA and back from Bakersfield. This was all within a one week period

Welcome to the site Jairito.

That engine was built as 5-30. 5-20 is a CAFE compromise; that engine does not call for 0-20. As I had that engine (2009) I can tell you going to 5-30 is going to do nothing. When the engine I had seized (daughter drove it dry), I put in a rebuilt. That solved the oil consumption issue. Until you change those pistons it will continue to burn oil badly. You can get a rebuilt for not a terrible price. I have an entire thread about this. Search for my posts in this area.
