You shouldn't get a precipitous drop in MPG, but I have limited knowledge of how this kind of thing effects the hybrids. Some do it - I think Vangm25 has experience with it on his gas engine, but not sure who has done it on a hybrid. You may get more noise due to knocking and the engine constantly trying to adjust due to the lack of the designed air intake.
