60.5MPG!!! 258lb ft of torque at 1800rpm. (who needs a hybrid? when you can get 60.5 MPG and have some fun?)

Now I want that engine in a Impreza, driving only the rear wheels. (that should get more MPG since it's smaller and lighter without the AWD stuff.) Toyota are you listening? bring that "cheap" RWD coupe... use this engine... at least as an option... =)

At present, Subaru's new diesel engine is destined only for Europe, but Subaru is taking a wait-and-see approach to its introduction in Japan and the U.S. At present, the engine will not meet California's stringent air emissions regulations. "We would only introduce the car in the U.S. if it was legal in every state," says Yamamoto. "Meeting the California legislation is very hard and very expensive. We are researching it, but there is no timetable." Subaru estimates that fitting the particulate filter needed to make the engine fully compliant would add around $1,500 to the price of the car.

And what would that filter do to performance?

I doubt the estimates for MPG is accurate either.

Wasn't there some guy, a professor from University of Irvine that invented some kind of filter that fits inside the exhaust pipe, kind of filtering out the bad emissions and only emitting out clean air? I would know since he got a Nobel Prize for it.

I'd take it if they offered it here in the US (I like the Legacy's). Then I could have some more fun with my 4runner on the weekedends.:D

^That doesn't help the enviroment at all.
Mind explaining why? He's only using the big gas guzzler(in this case, the 4 Runner isn't really that big considered other options out there) on the weekends and using a 60.5mpg car as a DD. Either ways, I see LESS gas being used and a higher average mpg.

OF COURSE, its probably better if he ditched the 4runner altogether, but this is better than nothing at all.

I love those 148hp!!!! And this of course:

Prod the starter button and you'll hear an unmistakable diesel rattle. It's not loud or especially intrusive, but it's there all the same.

This is really good instead:

the 320d's turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 diesel that produces 174 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque, !! :thumbup::thumbup:

They even compare a 2.0 liter gasoline NORMALLY aspirated engine versus a 2.0 liter TURBO diesel engine. :thumbdown:disappoin

i think with all the advancements in diesel technology (honda especially, they have a deisel powerplant that is ULEV2. It's a civic 1.8L diesel that puts down 250lb ft of torque) diesel motors may well replace gasoline as the standard eventually.
