Good Morning Toyotanation,

I've been lurking here for a while now, trying to find out what exactly I need to do on my 2009 Toyota Camry SE for it's 10/11th anniversary.

I've owned the car since 2014 and took it over with 33k miles. It has now slightly more than 96k miles and just got new tires - so I am hoping it'll last another 4 or so years for the moderate driving I'm doing (10k miles per year now).

I haven't had the time and money to give the car it's proper 10 year maintenance last year, so I'm hoping this year is the year.
I've identified that the motor has the typical oil burning issue, I recognized it last year during summer but didn't think much of it and just confirmed it last night after reading some more on these great forums. It seems though, that the repair isn't worth it and I would have to live with topping up oil every 1000 miles or so?! The engine is listed as "2.4-L L-4 DOHC 16V"
Other than that, the car runs great and never needed much work (which I've always been grateful for). The vinyl is starting to get a few small rust and water spots that I'm planning to fix soon.

Other than that, I've identified that I should do the following items:
  • Replace Spark Plugs (Planning to do this myself)
  • Alignment checked
  • Transmission Flush + Replace ATF Filter
  • Replace Radiator Hoses
  • Replace Thermostat
If you guys could point me towards other maintenance items needed, that would be wonderful! Really trying to keep this car going for another 4-6 years.

Awesome! I appreciate the detail.

Given the age of the car and limited resources (since it doesn't make sense to put in $3k into a car that is worth $3k), can you point out a few essentials?

You got the important bits. Despite the 2AZ being a known oil burner, it really is a low maintenance engine.
  • Serpentine belt
  • Spark plugs
  • PCV valve
  • Oil change
  • Power steering flush
  • Coolant flush
    • Thermostat optional
    • Radiator hoses optional
  • ATF drain-&-fill and filter
  • Brake flush
  • Techron Fuel System Cleaner

Perfect!
Oil change and Techron Fuel System Cleaner is something I am already doing every 5 000 miles.

Looks like the PCV Valve and Serpentine belt as well as the spark plugs are all things that aren't incredibly hard to do. Is this a correct assumption?

All the flush items seem to be something an actual shop is better suited to do.

  • Serpentine belt
    • This "seems" easy but a lot can go wrong. The main thing being that you can easily break the bracket you need to release tension on the tensioner. Not trying to scare you but it happen to me. (it's in my spreadsheet)
  • Spark plugs
    • Less than five minutes
  • PCV valve
    • Less than five minutes
  • Oil change
  • Power steering flush
    • This can be a bit easy, just messy
  • Coolant flush
    • Thermostat optional
    • Radiator hoses optional
  • ATF drain-&-fill and filter
  • Brake flush
    • This can be a bit easy, just gotta get lucky with rust and you need someone to assist you
  • Techron Fuel System Cleaner
On that note, I have a set of four Denso Long Life Spark Plugs that are less than a year old and used if you want them. Just gotta pay shipping. They need a home! They are the SR-XXXX spark plugs in my spreadsheet.

Welcome to the site Caf-Flo

A few questions:

How DIY capable are you? Can you do jobs like strut replacement, suspension replacement, etc.?
How valuable is the car to you?

That last question goes to your statement about the car's resell value and money you would put into it. I look at it another way: how much would you spend to get another vehicle. The nice thing about your car is it is very easy to work on, no specialty tools needed. A metric socket set, breaker bar, and you can do a whole lot. In fact, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm is all you need for many jobs. When you get into the suspension you will need 17, 19, 21mm sockets. And then the axle nut socket but that's not expensive. If you are short on tools a trip to Harbor Freight and about $50 will set you up to do most jobs.

Even if it is only "worth" $3k, that would not deter me from putting $3k into it as the alternatives are 1) buy a new car for over $20k (comparable car) or 2) pay for someone else's headache used car that most likely will have some issue or another to deal with; the lower the price the more you will have to deal with in maintenance/repair. The right $3k into your car should give you another decade of reliable operation. The true value of a car is what it provides for you or what someone will pay for it.

I pulled the oil burning engine out of mine (daughter seized it) and replaced it with a rebuilt engine. I swapped the transmission when it went belly up due to an odd issue. I have replaced the entire suspension, this and that due mainly to my daughter destroying it driving wise. So I put more money into it than what a KBB report may say it is worth, but I have an excellent car giving me about 30 mpg that I know every nut and bolt since I did all that work myself. I would not have paid someone to do all that, admittedly.

So, if you can do a lot of the work I'd recommend reading my 2009 Fix 'er up thread and do some of the similar things I talk about. Will last you for a very long time, saving you money in the long run.

I was reading your reply and thought to myself: "Hmm, I've read a similar thread yesterday where this guy was rebuilding a 2009 Toyota Camry just like yours and it seemed to be a very interesting project", then I recognized it's you!

I saw the 2009 Fix'er upper thread and went through all of what you did to the car, it is really great seeing the dedication you have and what you made out of the car. One reason I am very hesitant about putting too much work into the car is uncertainty about what the upcoming 12 months bring. I'm here on a working visa from Germany and might have to go back, at which point I wouldn't be able to take the car with me (without paying a high premium for shipping and additional modifications to adhere to local regulations) and selling the car then would hurt me twice.
Otherwise I would totally just follow your Fix'er upper thread since the modifications are great and being in the state of Georgia, I wouldn't buy another used or new car since that would just end up giving me another hefty ad valorem tax that I deem rather unnecessary cost.

Other than that I am very much a DIY person and pretty much have all the tools needed for 90% of the tasks outlined.
Given that the car is otherwise in great shape and will probably not do more than 10k miles per year, it seems that I should do the maintenance items outlined by Vangm25 and see to find a garage that would replace the serpentine belt and do a more professional checkup than I can do (just a Software Engineer myself) and do the remaining parts myself.

I just ordered the PCV valve, spark plugs and reading through tutorials to do the different flushes. I'll keep this thread alive while I go at it!

Thanks again!

That make sense. Yeah, you do want to minimize then at least for a year or so if you find out you have a long time to stay. In that case do the simple things and just keep the oil level proper. Loads of folks would buy your car as it is pretty easy to fix that engine, if that is the only thing to deal with. But, they would not pay premium so good plan to hold off on that for now considering your situation.

Don't drain/flush/clean filter in the trannie. I just got my 2009 Camry back from the delaership for an oil points check and asked the same question. The trans is sealed for life. Dealer told me never to touch it. Dealer found the power steering reservoir tubes running behind the engine on the fire wall were leaking, a common problem. Easy to fix but about $300. Check for sure.
I bought my Camry new in Dec 2008 and have 120k miles on it. The belt is till good (amazed by that) as are the hoses. Just check them for sure looking for dry rot. Still on my original alignment - tire treads will give you the clue. Dream car, little maintenance required. Changed my plugs myself using Denso iridiums. Check the gap as 3 of 4 were wrong out of the box. Be very careful in adjusting the gap so not to damage the iridium. Also checked the coils and still okay. Dealer said the coils should last to about 150k. Be certain to change your PCV valve which is cheap and easy to get at. Also clean your MAF wires with the proper spray and clean your TBI plate and connections with its proper spray. There are good vides on You Tube showing how to do all of this. Then it should be running like a clock.

Trans is not sealed for life. Definitely change the ATF fluid, filter, and clean/replace/upgrade the pan magnets. Someone's dealer is an idiot and some have blind faith in bad info from said dealers. And, no automaker has the balls to publicly define a 'lifetime'. From a marketing standpoint, its your loan/lease period.

10yr/100k is a great time to replace the thermostat/radiator cap.... since you're draining all the coolant anyways. Most here wait for a failed head gasket or overheat event before getting a clue concerning simple predictive preventive maintenance.

Replace spark plugs on a cold engine, use quality plugs, and use a torque wrench. Any double platinum, double iridium, iridium platinum, ruthenium platinum... plug should last a long time. If installed/gapped properly, and not knock-offs, ANY brand will work great. Unless your MPG is bad, engine missing,... plugs can last considerably longer. Pause on this until you get all the other services done.

I don't have an alignment 'checked'. It needs to be performed on all 4 wheels. Don't fall for the its all in spec and good to go. You'll probably have typical toyota 'alignment' issues from tired suspension.

PCV... definitely. Most wait until they sludge up or convert their engines into oil burners.

PSF can be siphoned an refilled.... and repeated often. Use a quality synth PSF/ATF.

I might assume that a car that drove 100k miles had enough oil changes, bottles of FI cleaners, air filters, cabin air filters, brake jobs,..... that I will simply leave out 'common enough' stuff and other things, like mods to the vehicle.

I've seen plenty of belts fail so definitely replace the serpentine belt. Pay attention to belt tensioners, idler pulleys, alternator/waterpump/pspump bearings......

Struts/springs/controls arms/balljoints..... suspension in general, replace in pairs as NEEDED or for some performance replacement. I've drove both of my Camries to 160k-200k without suspension rebuilding. Springs replaced for sagging along with struts that were beginning to leak and bounce, balljoints/tierod loose, rubber control arm bushings biodegraded..... keep driving until you notice handling issues and repair/upgrade as needed.

There are lots of sealed transmissions these days, and since the primary breakdown in ATF is generally caused by oxidation, sealed transmissions have eliminated virtually all of it.

You can always take off a transmission pan and do a fluid change. I don't. I have vehicles with non-sealed transmissions, several of which are trucks that have been workhorses, that are over 200K, one approaching 300K, in which I've never done an ATF change. The 1999 Jag I owned had a sealed transmission and was around 150K when I sold it to a friend, sans ATF change.

No matter how technology (and fluid technology is included there) changes there will always be many holdovers who want to do it "like daddy and granddaddy did" for decades after that's been ill-advised and unnecessary.

Given that I simply don't do transmission fluid changes, and have had multiple vehicles go hundreds of thousands of miles without issue, I continue to say, "If it ain't broke, or showing signs of something being wrong, don't fix it." That extends to ATF changes.

"Sealed" is a misleading term. The transmission still has fill and drain ports, you still break the lines when you change the radiator, etc. Transmissions either have a dipstick to check fluid level (and replace fluid through) or don't. The ones that don't are the ones that many called "sealed". No proper mechanic, ever, would believe a transmission is "sealed" and to never touch it. Run far and fast from that place.

I don't have the strength for another trans soap box, so click the THIS link in my signature for a blurb about trans fluid, if interested.

Hello- I have an '09 Camry 2.4 (2AZ-FE) with just about 430,000 miles on the original engine/transmission. Purchased it in 2012 w/ 60k miles.

It used to burn oil at quite a high rate. When it was at 200,000 miles I believe I was going through a pint every couple hundred miles. Anyway, I fixed that with a few things :

1. Fix/modify the pcv system:
- I found that the OEM pcv-system for this engine is not sustainable in the long-run and it's actually a huge contributor to a lot of issues in the long-run including: oil-consumption, high-emissions, dirty oil, carbon build-up, blow-by, etc. The PCV steals the high-vacuum of the engine necessary to vaporize fuel. Less vacuum to the engine means weaker combustion and more wasted fuel burning up in your exhaust instead of powering your wheels...

- So, I capped-off the pcv vacuum port on the intake-manifold. Hollowed-out the pcv-valve w/ a drill and then rerouted a 3/8 hose from the valve-cover to the low-vacuum source (before throttle-body; after MAF) for the new vent.

2. Before oil change at least twice a year, I'll arrive to the shop a half-hour early, park and idle the car. Pop the hood, open the oil-filler cap, and spray at least an entire 12-16 oz. can of WD-40. Be sure to spray in all directions to get toward the valves as much as possible. Then let car idle an additional 20 minutes. Only do this if your oil is going to be changed immediately after. Car should not be driven long-distances until after oil change or risk burning out a main bearing..

3. I found the dipstick not to be not air-tight. At one point I was noticing the oil-color being milky and dirty fast; I was pretty sure it was due to a small head-gasket leak especially at 400,000. Nope, turned out all I needed to do was put a vacuum cap on the dipstick slot. Moisture and etc, was getting sucked in through that tiny leak and contaminating the oil.

4. I've tried lots of different additives, etc. The only oil additive I use consistently with every oil change is LiquiMoly Mos2 - anti-friction.

Well, those are just a few things you can try that you've likely never heard of. I can upload photos of pcv setup, etc if interested. Good luck.
