I just bought a 2011 Avalon base trim in February and have noticed a problem with the driver's seat The main reason that I selected this car was that Consumer Reports rated the driver seat comfort as excellent. I have problems with my back, neck and shoulder and need a very comfortable seat. I now find that there is something like a horizontal piece of pipe that is hitting me in the very lower back and this aggravates my symptoms. The "pipe" feeling goes away some if you put in very high lumbar support, but that also causes problems. I am very disappointed and don't know what to do about this problem.

Yep - I know what you're talking about. Not only that issue but after about 50k miles I was so uncomfortable with the cooling fan pressing up into my butt-bone that I yanked the fan out.

Now I'm at 105k miles and the seat bottom presses against the underside of my thigh about midway between the knee and the butt-bone. It's to the point where I'm considering taking the car to an upholstry shop and asking them to replace or add foam under the leather. I'm really not that pleased with the comfort of the seats - regardless what Consumer Reports thinks.

Sorry for not providing you any solution...

It looks like I am going to have to get used to it or let my wife drive the Avalon. I could take the 2005 Odyssey EX-L which has very comfortable seats. Ain't that a kick in the a-- when a minivan has better seats than the Toyota flagship sedan that is touted for its comfort.

I have an '06 and I absolutely love the comfort of the seats. I am 6'2" 210 lbs. I honestly have not had a car this comfortable ever. Not even my Lexus GS was this comfortable. I must have the right build or I just got lucky with my seat.

I believe that yours is very comfortable. I had a 1996 Avalon XLS from new and kept it for nine years. The seats in it were absolutely comfortable, unfortunately this 2011 is not that way. I am 6'1" and 230 lbs.

Its a real shame that your 2011 is less comfortable than your '96. You could always do what Tom said and take it to an upholstery shop for added bolstering. Tom has pretty good advice from what I have seen on here.

I am sure your wife would love to take your new car for you. ;-)

ooops!! Looks like I need to learn how to post pics in this forum.
The picture needs to be hosted somewhere online and then you post the URL of the pic into the thread using the 'Insert Image' button (square yellowish box) above the text field.

You also have the option of posting your pics at http://www.toyotanation.com/photos/showmembers.php and clicking on the 'My Photos' link and creating your own gallery.

Re: What Can We Do About the Seat

No, I have not yet contacted my dealer about this. I intend to do so, but don't think they can do much about it on their own. This is a design problem that is the responsibility of Toyota USA. I believe that Toyota monitors this site. If everyone who has this problem would post their story here, Toyota would soon get the message and perhaps do something. After all, it is hard to push "Avalon Class" when the evidence is mounting that it is not very comfortable.

Uncomforatble seats Avalon 2011

I am trying to reach out to people that have had issues with 2011 seats.
I just bought one , it has only 200 miles and already I am in pain. I feel as though I am sitting on a lead pipe. We bought the Avalon since it was suppose to be high end and comfortable and roomy. My husband is 6 ft 4 in tall and I commute a long way. I am very upset that this has occurred. I would trade it in for another car if I could find one that has the same size and other attributes.. I just want it fixed.
Can others please post that have same issue and maybe we can all complain to Toyota and register a case.

2011 Avalon Uncomfortable seats

Hoping people that have bought a 2011 Avalon, can respond to this post.
I just bought a 2011 Avalon, limited since I thought I was getting a luxury car that would be very comfortable for long rides and for my 6 ft 4 in husband.. Boy am I really upset. Beautiful car but the front seats feel like I am sitting on a steel pipe and is very uncomfortable.
Who else have had this issue, have you put a claim in to Toyota and gotten a case number. Are there any known fixes?? Love the car - just want my seat fixed.
Let's unite together to get resolution please.

For those of you with the 2011 that are "sitting on a steel pipe", and I'll put this as delicately as I can, is the 'steel pipe' located around where the thigh bone connects to the hip? And, if that's the case, your car is equipped with cooled seats - right?

If I'm correct (and I'm basing this on my car) the problem is that the cooling fan is pressing up against insufficient padding. My solution was to unceremoniously extract the fan. That took care of my 'steel pipe'.

In my case there is not a blower. I have a 2011 with base trim. The seat blowers only come with the Limited trim. The horizontal bar is located in the seatback just above the bottom cushion. It appears to be the horizontal support member for the seat back or, possibly, some pare of the lumbar support mechanism. It hits me in the middle of the back right where the tail bone starts. There is some padding and if I scoot forward it stops hitting me, but that posture is not good for long periods.

When I was driving the 07 to houston I had this exact same feeling. As a temporary solution I would turn on the lumbar support. Then my back would ache again, so I would turn it off. I would do this On/Off this throughout the trip. IMO leather is the least comfortable, the cloth seats in the Voyager I used to drive was like memory foam. It was like sinking into a cloud.

Front seat uncomfortability

I've got mine 2011 Avalon Touring for about 3 months and I've put 6000 miles on it since. Did quite a few 6-10 hours one way travel and didn't notice much. But now, reading this thread, I'm recalling that it wasn't as comfortable as other older cars I had in the past. Maybe cuz I'm a shorter person and it didn't affect me much? I'll keep a closer observation next time I'm in the car to see how it is. But, the idea of getting our voices together and get Toyota to make its luxury car comfortable is a must. A lot of body styles from Lexus car have been transferred into our cars, why not the luxury seats? And don't get me start on the bluetooth system on our avalon. :headbang:
