Hi All,
I’ve been searching online and on the forums but i cant seen to find any info on sequoia soft brakes. I found a lot of info about tundras so i decided to post on here and see if u guys can help. I have a 2011 sequoia sr5. Just recently, i’ve experience soft brakes meaning to stop the car, i would have to step on the brakes all the way to the floor which is not normal. I did some test for the brake booster, master cylinder, check the brake lines and found nothing. One thing that i do noticed is that the clunking noise is no longer there. Im not sure if you guys are familiar with the clunking noise but my sequoia at first startup usually makes a clunk noise once i reach 12mph to 15mph. According to the tundra owners, the clunking noise is a ABS self check. I bought my sequoia with 42k miles and now im at 107k. I used to hear the clunking every morning but now, im no longer hearing it and my brakes are now soft makes me believe that its the ABS actuator that needs to be replace. Anyone experience any soft braking issues? If so, have u fix it?

If you are definitely not hearing the noise you could definitely have ABS system issues.

If you don't have Techstream to check data then you may need to head to a dealer.

Just an update, took the car to a local shop this morning. Everything check out fine and the soft brakes or spongy brakes is caused by the master cylinder. When stepping on the brakes, he can feel the brakes bypassing a second valve. With that being said, i just order a master cylinder and hoping that it will fix the issue. I will update once the new master cylinder is install.

Update: new master cylinder has been installed and its the same issue. They power bleed it and nothing. They thought it might be the wheel bearings so when they check, the wheel bearings are good so they give up as they cant find anything that would cause the soft/spongy brakes. Looks like i will be trading in the car as its not safe.

Welcome to the forums! :)

Sorry about yer brake situation. How many miles on the vehicle? Has it been in an accident before? Any aftermarket mods installed? Any maintenance performed prior to this issue? What kind of shop did you take it to? A general repair place? I would look into a brake specialist that knows the modern ABS systems and has the tools to work on those systems. ;)

Do you know if the flex lines were inspected while the brakes were being pressed on? ;)

Thanks.
I took it to a small local shop near me where they inspect the wheel bearings, brake lines, brake pads, rotors, and replace the master cylinder. They dont know what else to check because every thing looks good. The car has about 107k miles. No maintenance has been done. I recalled the brakes started going soft for a few days then it start working again. It continues this cycle for two weeks until it completely stop working. Im planning to take it to another shop that are brake specialist where they can also inspect the abs this weekend so we’ll see how it goes. I hope its not the abs actuator as it will cost alot $$$ to replace. I’ll update next week.

Yes, im leaning towards the abs too at this point. I’ll find out this saturday when i take it in to a different shop. If it is the abs then i will probably get used part as suggested by banzip pow above. I’ll update once i find out the root cause. Im surprise that no other sequoia owners are experiencing this.

Just got back from another shop. The shop that i went to is brake master. They said everything checked out and they are suggesting that i redo the master cylinder and then they will go from there. I already know how this is going to go so will now have to convince the wife to let me trade it in as it is not safe for the family and i dont want to be spending $$$ to eliminate one by one. By doing this, it may cost over $5k. Will update once i decide what to do. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Update: abs module that i bought from ebay did not work. It trigger all dashboard lights and the brake pedal didnt change. Return the abs and order another master cylinder from rock auto. It didnt work either. I had a mobile technician came out and he couldnt find anything wrong. He suggested to get another master cylinder. Will get another at auto zone or napa and see if it will work. Will update once im done

UPDATE: FIXED!!!

Hey all,
The issue is now resolved. I order a new master cylinder and instead of taking it to the shop to have them install it, i did it myself so I can see what is happening. Once install, I had my brother pump the brakes and put pressure on it while i bleed. I heard that manually bleeding is better than the machine. I bleed the master cylinder and then started bleeding the farthest wheel to the master cylinder and work my way up. On each wheel, i bled it 5 times to make sure there was air bubbles. Once all four was done, i turn on the engine and started testing the brakes. I noticed a difference and so i top off the brake fluid and took it out for a drive. The sequoia stop on a dime when i slammed on the brakes and the firmness came back. No more soft and spongy brake pedal. Thank u to all those who responded and assisted with this issue. I hope this post will help others or direct them in the right direction. Thanks again.
