We do not have a garage remote so we tried programming Homelink with our garage door opener motor. We have followed the directions very carefully, however it's not working. Has anyone run into problems? Any suggestions?

How old is your garage opener?
Every time I've done it, and I've done 20 or so times, if not more, Homelink has to learn code for garage door.
Do you have keypad for opener? That should work as donor code sender.
Also, keep in mind, it depends on how many years apart is Hoimelink and opener. I know 100% that older cars do not work with new openers, it's different type of code that requires rather spendy repeater that will transform old car Homelink code into one, new openers reads.
For rolling code openers, you need to keep pressing and releasing Homelink button, so that it emits a new code every time. 3-5 presses within 2 seconds usually does the trick.

How do you not have a garage remote? I'm pretty sure you need to hold down the garage door open button on the remote for homelink to learn the code while also pressing some random purple button on the garage door motor inside the garage.

(It's a PITA to do when I get a new vehicle, but it's been that way for 3 vehicles I've had --- 2005, 2010, and 2017)

Even though my opener has the "Learn" button and the rolling code (page 383 of the Owners Manual), I couldn't get Homelink to link up that way. Instead I had to use the other method (page 381), which appears to be copying something from another remote. That worked fine.

UPDATE: Finally contacted HomeLink who said ... given the model of our Craftsman garage door opener motor, we must use a remote (vs the motor) to program our vehicle, so we just ordered a remote. Hopefully that will do the trick.
