22-RE rebuild (pics..... of course!)

Well, after about 260,000 miles, the head gasket on the ole girl finally let out. Instead of simply replacing the gasket, I decided to lay down the coin and completely rebuild the engine. So i picked up a 94 ford explorer for $300 (which ironically blew its headgasket about a week ago ), parked the yota, and went to work. For gaskets I went with Engnbldrs master kit with the 268 cam. It was kind of a bitch finding time around classes and work.. but i made do.. and a month and $700 later.. I'm happy with the results:

The engine pulled relatively smoothly... i was in such a hurry to get the block and head to the machine shop, i stripped it down so fast and forgot to get pictures of the process

The culprate:
This little bitch took a decent chunk out of the top of the block.. set me back another $100 to have it decked

Finally got it back from the shop.. they didn't clean it that well.. but the machine work was phenomenal..

Got the pistons hung soon after

And naturally.. I had to ricer it up a bit...

Finally got to drop her back in there... the NIGHT BEFORE i had to go on a week long business trip to Arizona... It killed me knowing that she was sitting there, ready to start.. completely across the country...

Shes not 100% finished.. i just needed it back on the road. But man am i happy with it.. Sounds great and feels better.. The cam is amazing!
Still gunna clean it up a bit. And Ive got a buddy with a dino that owes me a favor. So Im hoping to get some numbers real soon.

All in all it was a great project! A lotta time and work but im happy with the results and im glad to have my baby back

Nice!

Glad to know shes runnin good now.

Is that just paint you used? I was thinking something along the lines of like you did your valve cover, taping off the yota part and doing the inside a different color. But ive heard that these valve covers are supposed to be breathable somehow? So Im kinda iffy about painting it. Have you heard anything about that?

Looks really good man, Good job
Hot damn, that looks nice! I have to say the ricer paint was definitely not a bad touch :p: Especially with your engine bay the stock color contrasting against the bed liner paint job makes it look aftermarket . It looks like you're actually caring for her
Looks pretty damn good:clap: What kind of auxillary lights are those mounted on the bumper?
very nice man. thanks for posting this up.
Thanks for the comments guys! Its nice to see my work appreciated!!! :D

Never heard that. Not sure how much sense it makes either. First aluminum isn't really that porous, and if it did breath, you would loose oil pressure out the cover!

lol that's what i was hoping for! And THEN! I beat the shit out of it on the weekends:thumbsup:

KC highlights 150w. CRAZY bright! Already been pulled over once for running them on the road
Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to post pics.
Very nice. So, is the cam that noticable?

BTW, KC no longer sells the 150 watt lights.
soo, did you gain like, 1.21 gigawatts?
He probably didn't gain that much even though it runs on plutonium
I'm curious why you took all the components off of the engine while it was still in the truck rather than pull it out complete and disassemble on a bench which wouldbe easier?

Because the intake has wiring all hooked to it so its easier to just pull that through the fire wall, unplug the connectors from the block and trans, pull the intake, then just have the block to deal with when pulling it.

When I pulled mine all I did was take the upper intake off to free up the wire loom and unbolted the A/C compressor so I didn;t have to refill the freon.

Yeah it really is! It almost feels like it did b4 the bigger tires. I can really feel it kick in at about 1700 rpm and i can now cruise a perfectly steady 60mph at about 2k. Its nice! Def not flux-capacitor levels :thumbsdow but still holds its own!

And I didnt know that about the KC lights.. Shit. I got theses used off a buddy but that sux if i cant get replacements.

The only serious and unnecessary thing i pulled was the lower intake. That was simply because i was anxious to get the engine started, and a buddy of mine had my engine hoist and wasn't going to drop it by my shop till the following day :thumbsdow Most other things (ac compressor, PS pump alternator) i just unbolted and pulled off to the side like you did.
How hard was it for you to set your timing?
Not bad at all! I missed the distributer location by one tooth at first, but quickly realized it, and it timed in real nice.
what front bumper is that????? ive been looking for one just like that, but for 3in body lift... i really dont feel like building another bumper. but i need a winch, i can be a little overzelous
^ BoyPilots? its made from the elixir of the gawds lawl
