260,800 1998 4-cyl bought brand new.

2yrs ago this car failed emissions test for incomplete cat monitor and I got a charity 1 time only pass. Was seriously thinking about letting the car go recently as emissions test coming up again soon and car issues wearing me down.

So with all of your help with answering questions and from looking up info from pervious posts I was able to fix 3 different problems for just $360 and it just passed the test and have 2 more years to drive the car.

1- incomplete cat monitor and also a broken flex pipe..... replaced the flex pipe section and cat converter at the same time with Walker part for $200
Cat monitor complete now.

2- rough idle and ran like crap......replaced coolant temp sensor $25.....did not fix problem but have new part in there now. Replaced upper O2 sensor with Denso $55 which fixed problem and now car runs and drives great.

3- 401 CEL code....seafoamed car, did not fix problem but it has now been seafoamed. Cleaned EGR valve, did not fix problem but I know it works and its all clean now. Replaced EGR VSV(Toyota) for $55 and relocated it. Did not fix problem but now have new part and its been relocated to better spot. Replaced EGR Modulator(Toyota) for $25 and it fixed the problem and CEL gone and passed emissions test.

I was really considering giving up on this car and the info, answers and support I got on this forum prevented me from doing so.

Thank you all!

just curious. did you try cleaning out the egr modulator filter? if it's very stopped up, it's supposed to cause some problems but mine never gets very dirty.

I did try and clean the modulator filter a few weeks ago with seafoam and air. I just went ahead and ordered the modulator after the valve cleaning and new VSV did not fix problem. There was a seller on Ebay selling the modulators for just 26 bucks and they were oem Toyota densos which was a great price so I just replaced the modulator and it worked.

roger that. that's a part that rarely goes bad and rarely get's its filter cleaned (cause it's not known it's there) so was just curious.
thanks for closing the loop for future researchers.
