2AZFE swap in a gen 4 ?

9342 Views 21 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Talisman
I was wondering the feasability of this swap (2AZFE from a gen 5 into a gen 4), has anyone here done this swap?
It seems like such an obvious upgrade but I found nothing on this in my search.
It would be nice to have the VVTI and the upgradeability of the newer engine.
Or maybe the 2AZFE head w/vvti controls on the 5FSE block?
Anyone done this or heard of this done?

no doubt it could be done (custom mounts, wiring, tranny upgrade, etc.) but why?

2AZFE - 157hp/160tq WITH VVTi
5SFE - 135hp/143tq WITHOUT VVTi

You'd be spending over $2000 to get 22 more hp. You could put an intake and new exhaust on your 5SFE and get the 22hp.
it would be an ill swap but seriously for only another 20 hp not worth it or even a 2000 celica gts engine with tranny , now that would be hot 6-speed baby:D
home-make a turbo kit or that burien turbo kit for the 5SFE is $2500 and with 5psi of boost they got a dyno result of a 45whp increase...so bang for your buck the 2AZ just isn't worth it. i think Sportivo Concepts will also be making a turbo 5SFE kit as well very soon...can't remember, sorry guys:disappoin

if you're hell-bent to do a swap though do a 3SGTE at least then you got a baseline of 220hp...

but of course as we all know too well substantial power gains come with a price.

Yeah dude for the same amount of money you could do the vortec supercharger that is i think putting 210 to the wheel (in a manuel) so i mean thats a lot of money....i would rather do a 3vz or something else swap then a I4 too...save up and then think about what to do lol....

Maybe, but you have an engine that already gives up about 400cc of displacement (2ZZ-GE= 1.8 L, 5S-FE= 2.2 L)and is tuned for top-end power (the second set of cam lobes doesn't jump in til after six grand). IT wouldn't work too well with the heavy Camry.

thanks guys for the nice compliment :D

i almost forgot for a 5SFE there is also the RIPPmods s/c that would run about the same as that engine swap...shook can tell you all about how great that s/c sounds on his camry :)

It's not an obvious swap becsue the engines are not related in any way whatsoever. You would need Custom everything and the engine is still pretty new so it won't be cheap. Also, the 2azfe head will not fit on the 5sfe. I am going to list more obvious ways tog ian power that would be less of a headache and/or cost less. Bolt ons to your engine won't do it either. Unlike what B duece said, intake and exhuast will only give you like 10 hp max.

225hp 3sgte swap
220hp(or is it 225?) 3mzfe swap
200hp 1mzfe swap
turbocharge your car. Use the burien kit.
Rippmods supercharger kit isn't really cheaper but it would be easier to do and you would make a lot more power.
there's no real reason to do that swap, unless you're rich/bored...

go with the Ripps supercharger, or the turbo kit...

as for 3s-gte's...

2nd gen (2nd gen All trac/2nd gen MR2) 3s-gte's are 200 hp/lb. ft. of torque...

the Gen 3 (6th gen Celicas/96+ MR2s) are 240 hp, and werent available here...

as for the 4th Gen 3s-gte (260 hp), you gotta find a Caldina for that one
If you are going with a 3sgte, the one that give you the most bang for the buck is the JDM 2nd gen. That is the one I was referring to. They can be had for pretty cheap and will give you 225hp. Plus these engines are so easy to upgrade, you can get it up to the Caldinas 260hp rating very easy.

thanks for the input, but there is no way intake and exhaust are going to give me anywhere near that kind of power.
The numbers on paper dont look like much, but the torque generated in the 2AZFE is lower and longer through the rpm range, and it is newer and getting alot of hype in the new Scion Tc, so Im sure the aftermarket will cater to htose needs.
^--good point, but still...

i'd make more sense to trade in your Camry towards the purchase of a 2002 I-4...

2AZ-FE also..
Also, I am definetley not rich or bored. I just happen to have a good friend who runs a towyard, and he just happens to have a totaled gen 5, which is uninsured and been left up for grabs.
So basically I was just toying with the idea of pulling the engine anyway (wheather I use it or not)
you just dont see toyotas in the yard to often you know.
i see the 1mzfe(vvti version) to be the cheapest way out. you can get one for about 1grand then get an e153 tranny swap to compliment it

edit : i didn't see that post...go for it if it's free that would be cool. you should have explained that before
if it's free, then fuck it...

just, be prepared to pay a lot for labor...

plus the 2000 or so for the TRD supercharger...

shouldnt be too bad...

still kinda pricey, though..
yeah free changes a lot of things, you didn't tell us that

hell, go for it then

Keri
Yeah, thats the problem I dont have the endz right now to pay for an install, otherwise I would have already bought a turbo kit or possibly a 1MZFE.
Im also new to mechanics, but I have pulled motors before, just not put them back and running without help.
Maybe hes in it for the realibility. I like my gen 4 enough to swap newer engines it in to keep the body. Although i plan on redoing the interior and doing some other stuff, it will have alot of time into it. Now that my car is pushing 176k, maybe 100k or less miles before it will be time to get a new engine. If you do it, please keep us posted.
I am about the reliability, and my gen 4 still has some life in her
(about 75k miles), but the power leaves alot to be desired, and I like to be a little different/thought it would be an easier swap than the 3MZFE since they are both similar size/weight, both OBD2 systems (California has alot of red tape when it comes to swaps) and I wouldnt have to change my front suspension to compensate for the weight of a V6 like the 3MZFE
the 3mzfe(all aluminum) doesn't weight that much more than a 5sfe(iron block & aluminum head)
