just starting to look for a corolla, but wanted to know how to tell if its a three speed or 4 speed automatic? I have not looked at one yet, so maybe its easy as looking at the shifter, is it labeled?

I think it would be like this for a 4-speed There should be a overdrive button on the shifter.
P R N D 3 2 L (or 1)

3 speed would be like

P R N D 2 L

The 4 speed has an overdrive button on the shifter handle. The three speed just has a little plastic cover where the overdrive button would be.

Also, from underneath, the 4 speed tranny has an 18 bolt pan. The 3 speed tranny has a 15 bolt pan with a separate differential.

You can also tell from the VIN number but I don't have that info handy . . .
