I have a 1993 Camry V6 and the third cylinder is skipping. My mechanic had the car for 11 days and replaced the plug wires and checked the injectors and nothing seemed to fix the problem. It doesnt skip every time I drive the car. I drove the car 3 times yesterday and 2 times today and it didnt skip. It does it intermittenly. If I can start the car and the cylinder isnt skipping, I know it wont skip at all during that trip. But when I start the car and it IS skipping, it will skip the whole time. I dont think its a bad engine or a bad cylinder because it would skip everytime I drive the car rather than intermittenly. Anybody have any ideas?

How are you sure that it is the 3rd cylinder that is the problem? Was the mechanic able to test it somehow? The first thing to do is inspect the electrical connections relating to that cylinder ... just check to see that the respective ignition coils are snugly plugged in .... wire not rubbing ... (should be one white wire and one black with orange stripe wire for ignition coil no. 3... The wire going from the igniter to the ECU for no. 3 is grey with a black stripe)... ... If nothing is obvious with the wiring, then you might try getting a replacement ignition coil from a salvage yard .... and putting it in at the no. 3 slot.

My mechanic was able to inspect/check the cylinder and found that number 3 was the problem. I have no clue how he did it, but he told me that number three was the problem. I will check the wiring like you said. Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I forgot to include that the spark plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor were replaced. I tried putting some fuel injector cleaner in the gas to see if it was a dirty or clogged injector. Still too early to see if this corrected my problem.

...If your engine has a distributor .... then it won't have the individual ignition coils ...
...The problem could be something wrong with a particular post on the distributor cap ... This would be unusual though ...You might remove the cap and take a close look ... Maybe also inspect it for any sort of carbon line or trail ... oil inside cap ... or anything else of interest.
What comes to mind is something wrong with the one of the valves in the third cylinder ... Ask the mechanic if he did a compression test .... How did no. 3 cylinder come out?

If the mechanic itemized his work on the receipt, put it up on the forum. I can't imagine any electrical problem that would just affect 3rd cyl unless it were in one of the components that he has replaced. Did you have the same complaint going in as coming out from the shop?

Which tests, if any, did he run or did he just replace components?
