When it's more than 2 quarts low the light will come on- more like 2 1/2 to 3 quarts low. Check the stick instead of waiting for the light, unless you're keen on killing the bearings and throwing a rod. Oil helps cool the pistons as well as lubricate the engine.

I don't trust the stick I have because it's not correct for my 1.8 3tc.
My light oil light is flickering on and off - trying to determine if it's really kind of low - or if there's a short/bad ground someplace.
Please do yourself a favor and get the right stick- you may have luck at a salvage yard. If you need to replace the dipstick tube, they are press fitted. Take that too.
