Try shifting into neutral before putting it into 4 wheel drive. That's what i do and it works like a charm. All other things being consistent.......not turning...not on pavement....not driving excessive speeds. By the way, i wish you still had to go out and lock the hubs like the good old days! This electronic crap is for the birds.
