Hi all! I am currently in the process of looking at a Paseo as my next project car... Currently I am in the research stage and checking out potential upgrade paths. I have been searching and reading on here, tercelonline.com, toyotagtturbo.com, and ClubSeo. Just had a few q's if anybody knows:

Having a hard time finding the difference between the 4efte that comes in the Ep82 and the EP91. I am reading (somewhere) about a difference in the CT9 from the EP82 and the CT9x that comes in the EP91... Any clarification on what the difference is?

Also looking at the CT9: I have read that the actuators are actually at fault for the CT9 not being able to hold higher boost. They apparently can be replaced by an HKS unit and reliably run at 17-18psi... Am I correct? Has anyone on here upgraded their actuator?

Sorry if these are newbie questions, but I am having a hard time finding answers.

Thanks in advance!

Richard,

There's not a big difference between the two engines. There's no power difference at all. I hope that helps.

The part about the actuator is wrong. Yes, you COULD put a boost controller on there and up the boost to 18psi, but at anything past 12 or so the turbo looses SO much efficiency that it's very bad for the engine. If you want to boost that high, you need a bigger turbo.

Thanks! So basically what I am reading is that the CT12 is about the only turbo that will directly bolt on (within a reasonable price) and its not such a good choice. I hear alot about the TD04 but I am trying to discover something that will run efficently up to 15psi and not make me buy a new manifold or replace my radiator...

Something that was taught to me when I first got into modifing cars is "For every penny you try to save is $100 worth of repairs!!" I know it is hard to come up with the money for specific performance parts but trust me in the long run it is worth buying the best, just takes a little longer.

A custom manifold should run you about $350 to $450. Just make sure the shop doing it knows what they are doing!!! If not look up and call the place www.fensport.com.

If you upgrade the turbo don't forget to upgrade the fuel system and management. If the 4e ECU sees over 10psi it freaks and starts dumping fuel and will wash the oil off the rings. You have to pay to play. That's where the saying originated, 'how fast can you afford to go?'
