4efte Swap to Paseo

11866 Views 23 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  4agetercel
I've been wanting to do that swap but im scared when i order it online no mechanics here (Surrey, BC Canada) would know how to install it and im stuck with a non refundable engine. Question is, what are the chances any mechanic can do the swap? If i bought the 4efte with wiring harness and ECU stuff4

thanks

Hate to say, but doing the swap correctly is the issue. I had someone do my 5efhe swap because I didn't have time to do it myself. It was the biggest mistake I've ever made. Now I am about to swap the engine again in my 92 Paseo and swap for the first time in my 96 Paseo. The physical part is easy, getting it to run properly isn't. Good luck!

even a certified mechanic? is it coz its a JDM
It's not only because it is a JDM motor, but because most tuning shops know very little about Toyota tuning outside of the MR2 and the Supra.

will they be held responsible if the engine fucks up?
Not usually. Most shops make you sign a waiver if they are doing something that they don't normally do.

oh damn this is depressing, its like a gamble ordering the motor online. if only i knew how to swap it myself :(

thanks for input though.
Yeah, sorry. All the good shops are in Southern United States and California. There are a couple here and there in between, but they are usually really booked. I've been burned by this myself and that is why I'm shareing. Just because they can do an awsome job with a Honda, doesn't mean they know Toyota? Besides aftermarket support in North America, that is one of the main reasons so many Tercels and Paseos end up with Honda power plants... because that is all these shops know. I just wish I had more time, I would help nyou out, but as is, I'm trying to find time to do my own swaps since I can't trust anybody here.

how did you learn how to do a swap? internet? if so link please :p

or did you go to school for it?
I own a 92 and a 96 Paseo. I've had my 92 since 1994 and have swapped the engine several times in it. I am self taught, but have been a mechanic for a Chrysler dealership for a number of years. Between this web site, www.TercelOnline.com , www.TercelClub.org , www.ToyotaGTTurbo.com , and others... you will find most of the info that you need. Start by clicking the link in my signature.
Look in the DIY section at top of this forum and you'll find a picture of my wiring diagram for the harness I made to swap my 93 Tercel. I can tell you the same harness does NOT fit my 92 Paseo. There is a member on this board as well as 2 on http:/www.board.tercelonline.com that will custom build a harness for you. There is also a listing on ebay for Josh to do it. Need links? Other than the harness and exhaust work it bolts right in. I never had to tune mine but I did have to restrict my 3" exhaust to make it stop overboosting.
<- That's why it says boosting to fuel cut there.

so i need to getm y exhaust done before the engine? and the engine im gonna order says complete harness?
The complete harness still won't attach to your car. Some wires that go to the underhood fuse box on the JDM will instead go inside your car and vice versa. The exhaust has to be connected to the engine after install, it doesn't bolt back up without mods. It's a very fun package afterwards but be ready for the high priced timing belt. Currently they go or $175.00 on ebay. I'm going to boost a 5efe in a Paseo but it requires a few high dollar parts as well. The custom harness should run about $400.00 but may keep from burning up an ECU that would be expensive to replace. There are a LOT of swapped Tercels/Paseo's running around. Stop by the tercelonline board and make a thread asking the swapped members to ID and watch a few pages worth pop up rather quickly. None will say they regret it.
First of all, thanks for the reply. So if I ordered this engine http://www.fnfmotors.ca/JDM-Engine-4E-FTE-1-3L-Turbo-Complete-Harness-p/fnf-toyota7.htm

how much do you think the additional $$ im gonna have to spend including labour, approximately. and btw what can I do to my 5efe to run faster till i've saved up enough money to do the swap?(cheap stuff)
Intake, plugs, header, exhaust. But have an exhaust made with your future swap in mind.

would i still be able to use the 5efe header with my 4efte engine whenever i decide to upgrade? and what do i change in the exhaust i've only got a muffler.

Basically this is what i've done with my 320,xxx km car(have had no problems so far, how can you tell if you're engine is shitty so i can watch out when it happens)

Muffler
Short Ram Intake coming in

what else can I add to it that i can use whenever i do the engine swap, i don't want all the N/A boost to be wasted.

PS: Is a 5efe paseo really that slow when not swapped? Like is it like turtle compared to other cars like Civics and Integras?
Not turtle when compared to a stock powered Civic LX or DX, the cars are nimble and quick around turns. They are also lighter than a Civic coupe. But yeah, they could use more power. Also, there isn't much that will carry over from N/A to turbo. The header would be useless, but you can build your exhaust from the front pipe back in anticipation of the turbo.
Thanks for the reply, i see in your sig you've been modifying paseos since 1994? God damn that is a very long time. So do you think if i weight till my engine blows up (5efe) and then i get the 4efte, would be worht it? I mean there could be other problems in the car that would be better off buying a new one? My car is a 1992 Paseo.

Also i've been reading through this forums a lot and i notice that you can boost your 4efte to a higher psi. Can you do that yourself manually? And how does tuning it really work? Like what do you do when you tune it:rolleyes:

I really don't wanna buy another car im just attached to this car lol, maybe coz its my first car
I own a 92 and a 96 Paseo. You would need to upgrade the wastegate and use a boost controller to raise the boost pressure. You tune a 4efte like you tune anything else, fuel, air, spark, and engine management to deal with it. There will always be a problem with a car, regardless if it's new or 17 years old. Personally, I'd rather deal with the simple problems of my old Toyota over a new one. Start buying a piece here and a piece there for your swap. Before you know it, you will have what you need. Also, click the link in my sig.
how do you upgrade the wastegate? Do you order it online or do i just tell my mechanic when i do the swap to increase the psi and upgrade wastegate?

Damn all these turbo stuff is confusing me, that's why im scared to do it coz i cud fuck up.
