Hey all,

My wife has a 2000 Toyota Camry CE and the rear driver's seat belt hasn't worked in ages. It's pulled all the way out and won't retract. I'm guessing that I will have to replace it, tensioner and all.

My question is, what year(s) REAR seat belts will fit? Only 1997-2001 (4th gens)? Will only the left/driver's side rear seat belts fit or will a right side fit as well, just flipped the other way?

Any help on this would be appreciated. We really can't afford to buy a brand new one, but need to replace it soon because we have to take our cousin and our son on a trip, so now we need both rear seat belts functioning properly.

Thanks in advance,
Mat

Ok, I just pulled the old one out. It definitely won't retract. It only "clicks" when you wind it back in and you can't pull it back out at all (even if you're holding it level where the ball isn't preventing it from pulling out). So, it's screwed. I'll have to definitely replace it.

Problem is, it looks like an "off gray", so I'm trying to figure out if I need to get the "tan" or "gray" version. The rear seat is definitely tan/beige, so I'm guessing that means the seat belts are the "tan" (or I've seen brown listed) version. But if you look at them in the right light, they almost look like a light gray too.

Anyway, so if anyone can help me with what years will fit (if only GEN4's or what), I would truly appreciate it. This way I can just put a new one in and be done with it. Unfortunately there is NOTHING in our pic-a-part yards here in Las Vegas. It seems like if there was anything, it gets totally picked out (and I mean EVERYTHING on it) the very day it comes in, so you have no chance of getting anything. So, basically, it's eBay or nothing I guess.

But as long as it works, I'm happy with it.

Thanks again!

I'm pretty sure a gen 3 would fit as well, but I would try to get the exact one either way. I had the same problem happen to my drivers seat belt a few years ago, just took the whole thing out and was able to fix it by taking apart the tensioner. Your spring probably came off the center pin, look at the spring and if it's not centered, bingo. There's a plastic cover over the spring that says "DO NOT REMOVE", yeah, remove that (as long as there's no load on the spring). Rewind the belt manually as far as possible, then reset the spring, replace the plastic cover, and reinstall.

Thanks Chris, I'll check it out. It almost looked like the spring completely unwound and then tried to wind back the other way if you try and wind the belt up. It's really weird. I don't know what originally happened to it as I wasn't around when it was "damaged", so who knows.

But since it can't hurt if I play around with it, I might try that. However, I checked on ToyotaPartsZone.com and it shows that they have a new one, correct color (which is the Oak Trim, so I found out via my VIN#) for around $92. Soooo, we might just get another one and be done with it. We also need a stupid driver's outside door handle as that darn thing snapped off about a year and a half ago too. Pain in the butt opening the door all the time with about a 1/4 of a handle.

bolink - Thanks for the info. While ours hasn't broken off completely like that as of yet, I'll definitely keep that in mind in case it does. I'm hoping to replace it before then. :D

Well, upon looking up info for the seatbelt on various Toyota parts sites, it appears that my specific part number for the seatbelt I need was used in 1998-2001 models. So, I believe it would be okay to get one from those models, but, of course, I need to get an actual LH side rear seatbelt in "oak" (beige/tan) color. From what I have found on eBay and various parts sites, they have been anywhere from about $60-$75 used. I can buy a brand new one for $91 plus a little shipping. I figure why take my chance on a used one that may or may not work right when I get it over $20? :thumbsdow

I'd definitely spring the extra Jackson to have a new belt, used is a gamble with an imperative safety device.

If you're going to go OEM, contact Toyopartsman via PM. He offers a good discount (30%, I think?) on OEM Toyota parts. I've purchased from him several times now, and he's hard to beat, on both price and service.

Chris - I agree and that's what I was thinkin'. Plus, if most of the cars that it comes out of have 130K+, then the belt will probably be as bad as the one I just took out, so what's the point? LOL

BMR - Thanks for the heads up! I'll shoot him over a PM with my part numbers when I have the cash and go from there. The lowest price I've seen so far has been ToyotaPartsZone.com, however, if Toyopartsman does hold to the supposed 30% discount on here, then he would have them beat (depending on shipping costs, I guess) by a couple of dollars. Plus, if it's helping out a fellow ToyotaNation person, then I'm all for that. So, I wouldn't mind helping him out as he's helping me out.
