I know this has been addressed before but I would like to know:

I have a 2003 Corolla 3 spd (no 3rd & 4th gear) and am financially unable to go the 1500 for a used 5 spd. I found a 6 spd for half the cost and want to know what complications I can expect to run into going from c59 to c60 trans.

Has anyone encountered an unexpected issue?

  • I was told by a Toyota dealer that the drive axles are in fact different as apposed to what the threads on here claim.
Will the shift linkage work without a hitch or do I need the 6 speed control brackets and connections for it to work? i.e. cable; linkage; etc...

I am planning on replacing struts/spindles/axles/hubs/bearings on both sides along with transmission. Will matrix xrs parts bolt on or should I stick to corolla?

What about the speed sensor? Any issues?

If anyone who has made the swap before could offer their experiences good or bad it would be a great help thanks.

direct bolt in on the matrix, nothing to change

not sure about the corolla though

Same Same, nothing at all different...

Matrix, Vibe and corolla all share the same floor pan ( I have black Vibe floor mats in my 06) and from struts to whatever mechanical fits, even rads, axles, brakes, it doesn't matter.

Just the interior and body don't fit, I have the wiper and headlight switch out of a Vibe on mine as well as rear wheel bearings and my wifes has front rotors and a tie rod and a few other parts all from a Vibe that was at our local Pick N Pull..

I know that the Matrix and Vibe where designed from the corolla and for the most part that is true. but when they introduced the 6 speed they changed the axle and I cannot use it. But MonkeyWrenchRacing told me the 5 spd axle will work fine. I'm not a mechanic by any means so I researched it repeatedly and everywhere I looked was saying change the axles. This doesnt have to happen. I would like to use the 6 spd axle for its design but I cant. as for the rest. I've already purchased most of the parts aftermarket for corolla.
