5efe Tranny questions

I am now on my 3rd Tranny and possibly going on 4th. The engine has 236,000 and still going. What are my options for manual transmissions? I don't like the gear ratio of the five speed and would prefer something shorter gears and able to last a little longer.

Is the Starlet Tranny a bolt on?

All tranny's used on any E series engine will bolt right on.
The gears from any A series engine can be swapped into your existing bellhousing.
If you're made of money, TRD makes several close-ratio racing gearsets for the 4E/5E.
Or if you're REALLY made of money, Quaife offers several universal racing gearboxes for fwd cars.
I'm pretty sure those are your only options.

edit:
what are you doing to that poor car that would result in breaking 3 tranny's? Between rallying, and solo racing, and all my daily driving, and teaching a few chicks how to drive stick, I'd like to think that I'm rougher on my tranny than most people. My car has 230K and I'm still on my first tranny...
Well I am not made of money, or I would be driving something better suited for rallying or go with a sequential from X-trac.
I am not doing anything out of the ordinary other than what you are doing.

Where can I find the gear ratios of the different gear boxes? Which is the stronger gear boxes?
how do you know when your tranny starts to go?
have you had to replace the clutch yet?
The first tranny lasted till around 180k then the main shaft made some serious noise and I couldn't get any power to the ground and had to pretty much crawl on my commute home. Second one only lasted about 3k till it started making a terrible noise as well. The third is making a knocking or popping noise similar to a cv joint but sporadically on acceleration from stops, braking, turning, and bumps.
Are these rebuilt transmissions?
no, these are used with various miles under 50k from salvage yards.
Try getting a quality rebuilt one.

And that's some really odd luck you are havig with those transmissions.:disappoin
get a 4-speed manual, i beat the shit out of one and lasted for almost 100,000 miles, i mean shifting without clutch, mistake upshift from 3rd to second at 90mph. the third trans you are on has broken spider gear teeth in the differential, had the same thing happen. it binds up and goes usually low speed, turns , bumps, etc. get a 4-speed and go a little easier on it and it will last, i think the 4-speed is more fun anyway-andy
Try a tranny out of a 4E-FTE, it works well. Their are several trannys that will work and can be modded to work in the fashion you wish. TO.com has several current strings going with tranny and gear ratio information that will swap into your car. Check them out.
