I know there are hundreds of threads about balancing and I think I've read them all. I've tried 5 times (at 5 different places) to get my rims/tires balanced properly and failed each time. Each shop has a different excuse why they can't balance my setup. 5th try was this morning. Got a road force balance with the Hunter GSP9700 balancer and lug centric adaptor, which I've heard is the best balancer available. The shop used stick-on wheel weights. About a mile down the road, wheel weights started flying off my truck left and right (second time this has happened). And now there is a slight shimmy in the steering wheel at 55-65 mph (shimmy wasn't there after the 4th try at balancing). Called the shop already and I'm taking it back in tomorrow. What the hell do I have to do to get a proper balance??? I'm about ready to accept defeat and just stop trying but my pride won't allow me to do so. What are my options???
Obviously stick-on weights are not the answer....

Btw...I'm running Helo Maxx 6's in black on BFG A/T's in 265/70/17.

Maybe have them unmount the tires and swap the tires from wheel to wheel, or even just rotate the tire 180 on the rim. Make sure they clean wheel before sticking on the wheel weights.

Well if the weight fell off then they were not stuck to well. Clean the inside of the wheel with Isopropyl Alcohol just befor they stick on the weight. It will dry
very fast. You need it dry.The Hunter GSP9700 is one of the best machines . Did you watch
to see if the tires were round.( I know silly question) If to much weight is needed then move the tire on the wheel 180* and rebalance.

I talked to the shop manager and the insisted that the wheels were cleaned before using the stick weights. I'll ask that they rotate the tire on the rim 180 tomorrow when I take it back.

What is radial runout???

Are stick on weights the only option? Can't they just hot glue the damn things to the wheel???

Definitely check to see if the tires are out of round. I just had to warranty out my 265/75R16 BFG AT's w/24K miles on them. 3 of the 4 tires were horribly out of round. I was getting vibes but my main problem was radial pull. I went with the exact same tire again and ALL my problems disappeared. This was the first time in 10 sets of BFG A's that I've ever had a problem. I chalk it up to a bad set.

Basically what zebra1550 is describing, an out of round tire. If the tires are not perfectly round, or nearly so (on the rim), all the balancing in the world will not cure the hop or bounce you get (and feel as vibs).

Radial pull can be caused by the belts not being in alignment with the direction of travel and will cause the tire to want to go another direction, thus creating vibes as well.

Makes sense...i'll have them check to see if my sneakers are out of round. Still doesn't fix the problem of getting the wheel weights to stick on the rim though...

The shop should be applying the weights to the inner surface of the rim. The weights should never fly off?
Just by the wheels spinning it should hold it on tighter.(Centrifugal force)

Do you have picture of where they installed the weights?

That's what I thought too...the spinning should help to hold them on.

I'll take a pic and post. Keep in mind this is the 2nd time I've had weights fly off my truck immediately after balancing.

See pics below. The pics are of both front wheels. If you look closely, you can see the adhesive residue still on the rim where the weights fell off.

Just noticed on one of the wheels there are also the clip on style weights that go on the lip of the rim. Only one wheel though.

have a look at the hunter website. it describes the functions of the machine and the steps the mechanic can take. as I recall, they can test the rim without the tire, the machine will store the data. then they mount the tire, spin it, and mash the drum against it. the machine can detect imbalances in the tires construction. then the machine tells the mechanic how to reposition the tire on the rim. then they should spin it, perhaps mashing the drum against it again, and start adding weights. based on your photos, it looks like you had a lot of weights on that rim. best of luck tomorrow. weights flying off reflects poorly on the ability of the mechanic, imho. :thumbdown,

if memory serves me, hunter can specify weight clipped on to the inside of the rim, as well as stick-ons closer to the outside of the rim. obviously, stick-ons need to be used on custom rims because you can't clip on the outside. hunter recomends alcohol, then stick em, then bonk em with a mallet. mechanic needs to be creative with your rims, they look complex on the inside. probably a young kid doing his best, with an asshole manager telling him to hurry up.

In your last photo you can see that the weights are not sticking well. Either they didn't clean the surface or they are using crappy weights.:dunno:

I think they didn't clean it! JMHO!

From my experience with the hunter GSP 9700, the tire shop gave me print outs for each tire showing rim run-out and tire run out... the GSP 9700 checks the rim, then the tire for out of roundness, then gives a best case match for the tire to rim to ensure roundness. they spin the tire on the rim to the match points then rebalance.. there is also limits to as how much out of roundness there can be.. they used regular wheel weights on my wheels.. i never cared for sticky weights..

good luck

So is the Hunter GSP 9700 considered to be one of the best ways to balance wheels / tires?

Same size tires I currently have. This is also the first set of AT's that suck out of 4 previous sets. Steering shimmy at 55 for the past year.
