hey guys,
i have an 06 access cab v6- 6 spd man 4wd trd o/r. ever since i got this truck it makes this clunking sound from underneath when i go over bumps. the bumps don't have to be big just sudden. cobblestone really sucks. if the trans is in gear its not as bad. but it is still annoying whenever i go over bumps. if the truck is in neutral it does it A LOT more and louder. heres the catch, it only does it when the rear hits the bumps. i've read in past threads that there is a clutch rattle/clunk. i just wanna make sure this is normal. i've been to the dealer multiple times an dealt with the same mechanic and it doesn't do it when he's in the truck plus there aren't any bumps where he is. go figure. i've attached video of the truck in neutral so you can hear the embarrassing clanking coming from underneath the truck. in gear it only does it over bumps. i taped it in neutral so you can hear it more and better. oh ya one more catch, before i got the rear leaf tsb i had installed leaf spring helpers and the rattling stopped. wtf. which made me think its the leafs slappin but then i wonder why its worse in neutral and i think its the trans. i'm so damn confused. let me know if this sounds normal. the other clanking is my keys shakin.

ps- i don't feel it in the pedals, steering wheel, shifter.

I think it's normal. Mine clunks if I shift over one intersection that's kinda rough. Now I just shift right before or just after so the truck is in gear and clutch is out.

Just listened to the videos. yeah, I think that sounds like what mine did. Just double check to make sure nothing's loose: jack, plastic dividers behind the seat, stuff in the bed, etc.

I can hear it. I have no idea where its comming from. try straping the camer under the truck unitll you find it. It could be like 100 things. Something is loose someting. Put the camera on the driveline. If i had to guess I say its the propeller shaft bearing.

i have no idea how to safely strap a camera under the truck without praying it doesn't become road kill. ps- the mechanic and i can't find anything loose underneath. driveshaft feels ok. speaking of that wtf is that rubber plunger section on the driveshaft? do parts move in there. i wonder if theres a little green man in there makin racket?

That plunger is a dust boot. Or whatever they're called. It keeps the shaft clean and lubricated, and dirt and other crap out.

As for the camera, just have Superma....er...Lotust climb under there and hold it for you.

it would probably be better if you had a friend stand on that same hill with the camera as you go down, so we can hear it better?

I posted on this on another thread today. I have the exact same thing happen in my truck. About ready to get rid of it because of it. It is usually only in neutral or if the clutch is in. There was some posts about this a year or so ago that I found on here and the guy who posted it went out with a tech in a brand new truck and it did the same thing. They said it was normal. I can't stand it. Would expect a little better from toyota. My 97 never did that. I turn heads when I pull in and out of parking lots or go over speed bumps because it makes so much noise. Makes me feel like I am drivin some P.O.S. I am glad you filmed it because I was going to do the same thing. It is so loud and annoying, I can't believe there isn't a fix for it. Even my deaf grandpa told me my truck was loud as hell when we were offroad.

its either the driveshaft moving around or the leafs themselves. its worse when in neutral or clutch in because there is no load on the drivetrain or rear suspension.

the whole normal thing really pisses me off. but i cant figure out exactly what it is obviously cuz i cant drive and hang under my truck at the same time

Mine clunks when I go over bumps in neutral/clutch pushed in. So I just leave it in gear now until I clear the bumps.
