I wanted to upgrade my system by making it louder but maintaining the clarity. I was thinking of putting 8" midbass woofers to replace the 6.5" ones. I have a single 8" woofer on my B&W loudspeaker at home and it sounds rediculously clean. Does any company sell good 8" midbass drivers? I think crossfire makes one, but i wasnt too impressed by them.

uh actually i think there's too many choices...

mb quart is known for their very clear high frequencies, not for bass/midbass.

Sorry, i meant MID-RANGE, not mid-bass. Aparently they're different (as kicker's webpage indicated)

So are theyre any 8" mid-range drivers (capable of playing frequencies from around 60-5000). I looked on the image dynamics and focal webpages and they didnt have anything.

there's no need for such a large driver just to play midrange... any speaker even something like a 3.5" speaker will play midranges just fine.

Aren't mid bass drivers are an equivalant to home audio woofers? I never seen a setup with mid bass drivers, but it sounds like it is for a real serious system which has a lot of crossovers and a good equalizer.

If my theory is right on the sound I would think that if have a basic high power system you don't have speakers for every speaker range. So if you get into specifics like that you gotta have one good high power multi channel amp or a lot good quality amps. Gives me the chills thinking about it.

What is it that your looking for? Just a midrange speaker? If thats the case I would suggest looking at parts express or madisound, they sell quite a bit of midrange speakers, I'd suggest Vifa's. If your looking for something for your car then get a 2way or 3 way component set. Sets can range from 199.00-1200.00 just depends on how serious you want to get. I have a few components sets I'm selling for cheap if your interested (MB Quarts). Just in case you ask the difference between 2 way and 3 way is that a three way component set up seperates the high, midrange and midbass, while a two way combines the midrange and midbass into one speaker. Three way set are a little more difficult to set up but sound alot cleaner. Majority of people run two ways because it is easier to set the image in the car (usually in the kicks).

Not quite. A lot of home audio systems use smaller woofers than what most people use in their cars, but often times they're ported too. The nice thing about audio at home is that there's less noise coming from other stuff like the car itself.

I suppose in theory a "perfect" system would come with just about every speaker size, reason being that speakers can only play certain ranges accurately. Although, you could also use horns to replace a good ammount of those speakers.

^I'm not sure to whom you were talking to but I personally would like a mid bass driver. I would like my mid bass to hit harder. I think it would be more impressive to have a cleaner mid bass with a heavy low bass. That's why I was interested in it.

Exactly why I went with a good midbass driver in an enclosure, crossed over right above the subs and below the midrange :)

Lots of bass can be fun, but it gets old quick. I got tired of a system with an awesome midrange to high end and a killer low end, but nothing in the middle. It just sounded like something was missing.

Yup kgasso. That's my reason for wanting to get a set of 4" components for my kickpods and then some 6.5" midbass drivers for my doors. I think I know which midbass I want but just not what 4" components. And the reason why I want 4" rather than 5.25" or 6.5" is because it can more accurately produce the higher midrange frequencies.

That is way too high, you need to high pass it at around 63Hz and low pass at around 400Hz, midrange can take it from there up to 6KHz

They are used in conjunction with a USD Waveguide that is good from way high to down around 600. It is part of a component set and that is what the passives are notched at, so no available adjusting for me. It really sounds good, anyways.

This is the correct answer. I blew my kicker RMB6s cause I didn't set a LPF on them. :( Due to their shallow depth, they bottom out easy on low frequencies.

Well, I just went outside and looked at the settings.

Waveguide - 750 - High
RMB8's - 80 - 750
DHD10 - 80 on down

To answer Maui's question, he should be looking at MB Quart or Focal if he wants a speaker that plays from 60 - 5000. That's quite a range of octaves and not many speakers can step up to that kind of ballgame. The word affordable is no where near this arena.

Well actually, in my system now, my midrange speakers are crossed-over between 100 hz and 3200 hz. I just figured that a driver larger than 6.5" will be both louder and sound fuller, with more emphasis on the vocals. My home speaker's 8" woofer sounded great, so I just thought that the same could apply to a car speaker. I guess what I really want is a 3-way component system but dont want to dish out the 400+ dollars. Lows and highs are getting old for me too. I think I appreciate the clarity and fullness of the vocal range.

So....did someone mention that MB Quart make a 8" driver?
