Hi,
my 1983 Tercel recently had some charging problems.
We replaced the Altenator.
After it still did not work, we had the battery (2 yrs old) tested and it had a bad cell.
We installed a new battery.

But...... the initial problem still existed.
The Dashboard charge light and the parking brake light stay on all the time.

Someone suggested that it could be the "Charge Lamp Relay".

Could someone confirm if this is the right diagnoses?

If it is could you please tell me exactly were it is located?

At the same time that this problem developed one other seemingly unrelated problem also appeared.
The motor overheated and threw out a pint of anti freeze.????

Thanks for any help you can give me.

sounds like a defective alt then, are you sure the original was internal?

TOYOTA "TERCEL" 1983
Found 4 Records

Part Name Cyl L CID Eng
Code Option WAI Part Elec
Sys Series Output
ALTERNATOR 4 1.5 89 3AC w/ Ext Regulator # ND ER/EF 50

ALTERNATOR 4 1.5 89 3AC w/ Int Regulator n/a ND IR/EF 55

notice 1 is er and one is ir....

the color of the plugs give a clue, green is external and brown is internal, but I can't say the car end color matches...

The altenators are identical.
Same numbers etc.
Both have a little plate on it that says "Built in Regulator"

I might have to get it tested, sure hope the new one didn't burn out on me because of the bad battery.

But were is the Charge lamp relay, if I can find it at least I can ohm test it.

Does this car even have a "Charge Lamp Relay" ???????????

does the car run? if so there may be something grounding out the electrical system, or like you suggested a bad charge lamp relay, also while checking electrical syestem check fuses under hood, drivers kick panel, and passengers kick panel, as well as fusible links if you have them.

The cars starts and runs fine.
All lights etc. work.

Someone else suggested the charge lamp relay. But I have no idea what it looks like or where on this 1983 Tercel it is hidden.
I am guessing that it is something the size of a flasher.
Could you tell me exactly what it looks like and were it is, Please.

Thanks for your suggetions , I will do a more thorough check of the fuse boxes tomorrow.

Thanks again, appreciate your good advice.

Ok

I would look a the belt and pulleys. IF the two lights are on this usually means that the alternator is not producing enough amperage (spinning).
