Ok My 1986 Cressida with 111 k miles has a very frustrating problem ... when it is cold , no matter how hard you press on the gas pedal , the car will only very slowly accelerate till the RPM picks up gradually or is somewhat normal when it warms up .... the cat was replaced , that was not the problem .
Also the gas pedal is extremely stiff and much harder to push down than it should be ( I have 2 other cressidas and are not like this )
I do not know when or if the timing belt was replaced , I got the car with 79 k in it 4 yrs ago . the fuel pump was replaced at that time and not since .
The engine now seems to sputter and it does not have nearly as much power as it should have ... Any body know what is hapening ?

vacuum leaks, ignition tune up, o2 sensor, coolant sensor, since you say the fuel pump was replaced, check the fuel pressure, get a compression check... the usual tune up items are a good place to start. Check/clean the EGR, throttle body, and IACV (little device next to the throttle body on the manifold) usually show improvement in idle/response quality.

hm ,, It was the fuel filter that was replaced ,, my mistake . I did a basic tune up , new plugs , wires and cap and rotor ... that leaves the 02 and coolant sensor , compression check , etc .. lots of little things that are difficult to determine .......

oh yea, the biggest thing to do to improve accleration is swap in a 5-speed. the atuotragic slushbox IS really really slow till you get the revs up.

Is It Hesitating After Starting On Take Off ?

I Had Trouble With My 86 Cressida Just After Starting And For A Few Minutes After With It Hesitating And Not Wanting To Take Off Like It Should. The Problem Turned Out To Be My Mass Air Flow Sensor. After Replacing That Among Other Things Prior...ex Plugs, wires Cap And Rotor, Fuel Filter..the Mass Air Flow Sensor Was The Fix.
