86 mr2 swaps

I have a buddy with an 86 mr2 that just and his engine just gave out. I was wondering what swap are out there that would be a direct bolt on to his 86 or something pretty str8 forward. I dont know much about mr2's, so the only thing I could come up with is going from N/A to a SC one. Is that a hard swap. While the engine is out would it be that hard to swap it to a manual, since his is an automatic. I have done the auto-2-manual swaps several times but on hondas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
