86 Tercel

i bought a 1986 tercel manual 5 speed. it a strong car but neds some work. it has the small problem though. it has a rebuilt different engine. when its cold and it doesnt want to start until you press the gas. then in second gear if its cold the cars hops and keeps going any other time shifting its ok but just in second. this is my first toyota and i like it alot the parts are very cheap and it was only 1k. the body has 113000 miles on it and the rebuilt engine has less than that. if any one can help me please let me know. im also thinking about putting a 4e-fte engine in it if it will fit. or something that can. well thanks.

Which engine do you have? What is the model # or Vin #
hummmm............

the engine is a 3a-83w engine. that what it said on a yellow sticker. the engine that is in there now it some toyota engine but not the one for it. it said the engien that should be in it is a SOHC 3A-C but this engine i didnt put in but someone elase did and it is rubuilt. so if the 3a-83w is right then can the 4E-FTE engine fit in it......? well thanks for your help i hope this helps out a little more.
Wont fit, 4e-fte doesnt bolt to the 3a-c transmission, 4a-ge however does.
thanks......

which one for the 4a-ge. silver or black. the silver one i think is for rear wheel drive. is that true or is it fornt wheel. im not sure on the black one though......? can you please tell me which one it might be....thanks.

Silver/blacktop are front wheel drive formats, but needs= some modifiying to fit in a Tercel same as my AE86, for no modifying i would suggest a AE92 4a-ge
the tercel..........

the tercel has an 3ac/3a engine in it. but i want to know if you have put an 3a-ge engine will fit in it that will bolt on to the transmission? or do i have to get an engine with a transmission? also have you done this before? if you have the toyota dealer said to ask if you have done this before. they also told me i would have to get a corolla fx to get the 4a-ge engine. but the engine in the car is the right one.
first off theres no such thing as a 3a-ge, second any car with a "A" series block will bolt up to the tercels transmission... it could be a 7A-FE doesnt matter, and yeah the fx16 engine will work but its the same as an AE92 4A-GE (88-92 corolla gts) except the 90-92 4ag's have a bit more power than the fx16 PLUS the fx16/AE92 engine is a front wheel drive format and the tercel I KNOW is front wheel drive but the engine goes from front to back not from left to right, so youd actually be better off with the engine and rad out of an AE86 because of the opening on the intake manifold has to come out the front, if you try to put an fx16 engine in the throttle body will be right up against the firewall and you wont be able to do jack with it un less you do some modding to it or get the AE86 manifold. To answer you question have i ever done this... no... but im going to be putting the 4A-GE 20v blacktop in my AE86 which is a harder task than putting a AE86/fx16/AE92 4A-GE in a tercel or even my AE86, but i have helped swap a couple VW's to VR6's (MK2 Golf/Jetta) automatic to 5spd,so i have a good idea on what is needed, For your tercel your gunna need:
1. gastank with a fuel pump and baffle & Gas lines/fuel filter
2. 4A-GE or whatever engine you want with the full harness (uncut is easier to work with) fuse boxes wiring diagrams of sorts for the tercel and the donor car for the "hybrid" harness, wiring knowledge helps too.
3. re-do exhaust making a custom one, (could use an AE86 exhaust manifold)
4. AE86 engine mounts if the 3A-C ones dont work
5. Transmission unless youre keeping the one in the car (i dunno if you want auto or stick??)

Im sure someone could add more to this list

cool man thanks.....

no the dealer parts guy was tell me there was a 3a engine but he also told me about a 3ac engine. so i dont know. but your saying i can use the engine from an AE86 to put in the tercel. if i do that will the car then have to be switched form FF to FR? if im not mistaken that the AE86 is rear wheel drive. but is the 86 Tercel the same body weight as the AE86? if you can are you going to be selling your old AE86 engine???? well later man thanks for the help.

Yeah the 3A and the 3A-C exist but no 3A-GE thats what im trying to tell you... and no you wouldnt be changing to RWD because youre useing the Tercels transmission.... heres a link to what the letter of toyota engines means, it'll help you understand http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Toyota_engines
hey thanks much.......

that helped me alot. thanks for the website. so do you know this. 4a-g engine will that work on the tercel. i might have some one rebuilt one with all new toyota parts but on a 4a-ge block for around 3k. but sad part is the 4a-g engine isnt around any more. it is rare if you find it. but my questions to you are.
1. i have a 5 sp. m/t. will the 4a-g engine work on it or will have to do the mods like you listed on the post or, let the guy rebuild it for 3k witht he ae86 parts.
2. once you replace your engine in your ae86 mind if i can get a hold of that engine.
3. where can i get aftermarket parts online for the engine.

thanks much.
Not bad for a 19 year old eh, if you get the 4A-GE out of a AE86 it wont have a problem going in no modding needed, its just wiring it up, the gas tank fuel lines etc.... i would sell you the engine out of mine but its just a 4A-C not the 4A-GE because mines a SR5, the GTS AE86 has the engine you want, what kind of parts are you thinking?
well i was thinking about something like this.

http://www.passracing.com/engine_rebuild.htm

that is the enigne i want to use but im thinking of doing it with the block then get after market cams. then port polish the pistons. then put a faster pully system then put a blot on turbo or supercharger. after that get a new wire harness then the ecu chip for the gts. after that everything will be perfect i think.....lol. well hey did you go to school to learn this stuff thats what im going to do. probally try to work for toyota so i can get really cheap prices on parts.....on the other had i might open my own shop or something. well hey thanks for the help.
well you can get that but it doesnt look like they sell you the whole engine, sensors intake manifold blah blah blah, id try to find an engine from an importer that sells the whole swap it'll cost you aalot less unless you want to get a BRAND new engine than go for it and get the rest of the parts you need to complete it from an AE86. well i did co-op at the dealership here in london and my buddy did a 3S-GTE swap in his celica and told me all the stuff to do and guided me through it and the main tech i worked with tought me alot and actually encourage me to rip apart a couple engines and when i put then back together they ran good so i suppose i went from there.
Unless you have the wagon or a very early production hatch it didn't come with a 3a engine. It came with a 3e engine with a VVT carb. that is why I asked for a VIN or Model #.
1987 was the year 3e carbed came out, 1986 was still the old hatch with the 3A-C, trust me i know my dad has owned a 80,83,83,85 and an 86'
thanks for the help........

so where can i find an AE86 4a-ge enigne. ive been looking for one but i cant seem to find the engine. if you you both can i would like some web pages to find the engines. well thanks for your help.
goin with a wrecking yard is an option, but i dont know if you can find one for a AE86, if you find one for an AE92 you can put the intake off an AE86 and make it work or have it modded.
