My wife's '86 toyota is miss firing at driving speeds. Usually happens when the engine is under load and the throttle is past 1/3 open. I'll be driving along, go from 1st to 2nd and start climbing a hill, the engine will start miss firing and keep doing so until I let off the gas and gently ease back onto the accelerator a little, if I push farther down on the accelerator (ie 1/2 throttle) it will start missing again. any ideas? I know more about early model fords than toyotas. thanks for the help.

Carb or EFI

if carb I would say it's possibly choking out. My plow truck does it untill it worms up.
Maybe a rebuild is in order.

If its EFI I have no clue. That technology is to new.

if it's EFI it could be something silly like a TPS. My truck does sort of similar thing if you are running with a small amount of throttle and then ease off of it, it start bucking a little. i think it's that the thing is worn out and it gets confused between idle and thorttled running. it goes away if i let off and ease back on to the same spot.

Just a thought.
