'87 4x4 emissions question

About a week ago I bought an 87 4x4 from California. I'm wanting to know how much of the emissions stuff I can take off without hurting how the truck runs? The converter was first on my list then I got to looking at the egr valve and all the other canisters and switches. How much of this stuff can I remove to inprove performance or at least keep it the same?
