Hello all.... New to the site and having a hell of a time figuring out what is going on with my lil beater. Any advice ?
I have a 87 reg cab 4X with the 22R that has a hesitation about 1/4 throttle only when the motor is coming up to and at temp. When the thing is cold .. no problems at all. I put a rebuilt carb on,plugs, cap, rotor, wires, vac advance, checked vac. lines,the timing several times, fuel pump, fuel filter,pcv valve ,checked egr and pulled it off to make sure it wasnt plugged.The thing runs fine otherwise.. idles great, runs down the road good, but when I stop and try to take off she falls on her face ... give her a little gas and it seems to come out of it Not sure of what else to do. Any ideas? Thanks

When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter ?, also, have you checked for vacuum leaks ?.

sounds like maybe a bad carb
mine had kinda the same problem but it was a bad distributor i got. it would hesitate everyonce in awhile and backfire when i first hit the gas.

Well... no backfire, Just a very serious pain in the ss. I forgot to mention that I did "try" to put a remaned dizzy in but the gear would not line up right... it was either to far or not enough... the gear was off just a little bit. Put the old one back in with the new springs that was in the new diz and lined up fine.........don't suppose that the new springs has to do with it???

if one of the springs is in the wrong spot or wrong spring or anything like that it could cause it because it is going to advance the ignition to far when u first push the pedal. its sounds more like a carb problem but who knows.

I did pull the springs off one at a time so I wouldnt get em crossed... When I had put the carb on the first time .... damn I was ready to burn the thing to the ground.. the more I drove it the better it got.. thank god . ...... I think I got 12 mpg the first week and now about 18-19 hyw

id say you have a carb problem. probably something to do with the accelerator pump.

well with a new (reb bult) carb I thought it would be good.............. NOT THE CASE

kind of hit or miss on rebuild carbs. did you get it locally? did you install it?

sounds like a timing advance problem. Northwest off road sells a advance kit for stock dist. for 12 bucks and works like a charm. Advance it a couple degrees and adjust the idle mixture screw to lean it a bit and try again.

I got the carb online and put it on myself. It went on ok, had new base gaskets with it.Pretty much common sense to put on.

Myyota.. I changed the filter out about a month or two just for the hell of it.. It probably wouldnt hurt to do it again. I sprayed around the carb and lines and nothing showed up, all the lines looked good

84 Pre... you had mentioned before about the dist. advance.. toyota man from the other post suggested it to.. for 12$ you get the kit..I'm gonna give it a shot and keep ya posted.. Thanks!

Damn... The last couple month's have been VERY crazy! Anyway, put the kit in and no diff, checked the vac advance for the hell of it and bottom adv. is bad... already ! Called the place and they will stand by it, will pick that up in a few days ...I hope. Also checked the aap.. the temp switch to that was bad too. I had one on another motor and robbed it. So far I have seen improvment on mpg and take off's. Go figure. Should be back in the game when I get the other adv. :clap:
