Hey guys,

Looks like my brother needs a new clutch in his [used to be mine] '88 Tercel 4-Door Liftback non 4x4. What do you guys recommend as a replacement kit?

The chassis has in excess of 130,xxx miles, some of that on a new, rebuilt motor put in about 6 years ago. I'm not sure if that came with a transmission also. The VIN is JT2EL32H9J#######. What engine code is that? 3AC, 3E, etc?

Also, I'm pretty much a n00b at work as extensive as changing a clutch, so I was wondering about how many hours of labor it would be to do a complete clutch kit. If it isn't that labor intensive even for a n00b, I do have friends with lifts, air tools, etc.

Thanks in advance!

The '88 has a 3E engine.
There are two diameter disks used on the Tercel "E" engines. The older models have a smaller diameter disk the newer Tercels and the Paseo have the larger diameter. The pressure plates and flywheels are the same. I put a the larger disk in my '89 when I put in the Paseo engine, with the original flywheel and new pressure plate. The original disk was the small diameter.

Thanks for the info, Donald.

Do you happen to recommend a specific clutch kit?
And what is the labor time for something like this?

Sorry for the post loaded with Q's, I just want my brother to have a working car again.
It's bad enough he was elected 'Worst Car' in his Senior HS yearbook :smokin:

*edit* - I also have a Haynes manual to help me out a little bit...

No, not really. I was just trying th keep the price of the swap down so I went to Advance Auto Parts. They had it on the shelf, the Toyota dealer would have had to order it and the price at Advance was less.
Just make sure whatever brand you get it is the larger diameter, It will last longer and not cost much more.
I had started a labor log when I started my swap, but that didn't last for long........Sorry.)
I can tell you though the manual says thet you will have to take the engine and transmission both out (maybe not all the way, just so the gearbox shaft can come out of the clutch) to separate them, so you will need a hoist. On an auto you can take just the tranny out.

Good stuff again...

Also, the '88 DX non 4x4 with the 1barrel-carb, 3E motor is NOT the 'wagon' but actually a '4/5-door liftback,' right? I ask because when one of my rear windows was smashed, the window guys ordered a wagon window and it was totally diffferent and they told me this distinction, but I wasn't sure...

OK! I know that model as the 4dr hatch back. I don't think there were many of those sold. (might be wrong)
Believe it or not Honda Civics are sold looking like that in many other countries, 4dr hatch back.
