Hey guys, on thursday I'm going out and buying a head unit and some basic co-axial speakers, and on monday, a friend will install it for me. I need to know what things I need to do the install.


1. Head Unit wiring harness
2. Do I need a speaker wiring harness? Is there even one?
3. Toyota pocket? My current stock radio has a tape deck below the radio, so If I dont have a pocket it'll leave a big gap right?
4. ??? What else do I need guys

Assuming your friend or you already have the tools:
You'll need a dash kit or pocket to fill the void the new stereo will leave, approx 20 butt connectors and a crimp tool if you want to crimp the wires unless your friend is going to solder the wires, in which case soldering supplies and equipment is needed.

Speaker wiring harness isn't neccessary but you can get one if you like. It has a plastic connector at the end that connects to the plug the stock speaker connected to. On the other end is two bare leads. You can just cut the connector off and add some wire if you need to extend it. The speakers should come with wires, although you might need a few more butt connectors.

you can get the DIN adapter anywhere i got mine at bestbuy for 15$ or you can get it from a local stereo store for 10$? may be. it's fairly straight forward installation. don't solder use butt connectors it's much faster/easier for next time around

Butt connectors? Do you know which type and where I can find these butt connectors?

Go to Kragen, Autozone, Pep Boys, Frys, Napa, Home Depot, or Lowes and look at the electrical section. They normally come in a small clear plastic container or bag. Radio Shack should hav ethem also.

Get the ones specified for 22-18 or 22-16ga wire. They're the red or pinkish color ones. Blue and yellow ones will be too big.

Autozone should have them. Go down to the store and look in the electrical section where all the little lightbulbs (not the ones for head lights) and then should have a bunch of electrical parts there.

If the employees still don't know what butt connectors are, ask them for ring terminals, rocker switches, or something along those lines, that should lead you to the right section. If you ask for ring terminals and they show you battery terminals, that guy's just a dumbass.

Oh, I assumed your friend would bring tools
Tools you'll need:
Screw drivers philips & flat head
Sockets - 8 and 10mm and something to drive them with. Alternatively, you can use nut drivers if you have those in the propper size
Wire crimper
Wire striper

Aside from that, you shouldn't need anything else. A multimeter might come in handy, but I doubt you'll need it.

Well, I couldn't find a Scosche Toyota pocket, but I asked the auto store guy and he said that a metra universal pocket he had should work? So I just bought that, would that work too? I'm not installing until monday

Does the packaging for the Metra box say what cars it fits? If it lists your car it should be ok.
The one I have in my car is from a universal kit I bought and put together. It listed the compatible cars on the package though.

Did you find the butt connectors ok?

Actually when I bought the wiring harness and metra pocket, (it doesn't list which vehicles it fits) i asked the guy if he had butt connectors and he said i'll give you some. He grabbed a hand full of 18-16 (light blue) and gave them to me. I asked if he had the 22-18s, and he said no, but he assured me that these should do fine (18-16).

So would they work?

yea, those will be fine...just make sure you crimp them down good.

The connectors will be ok. Use crimpers - don't use needle nose plier like I did when I didn't know what I was doing. It makes things a lot more difficult and the connections won't be as good...It sucks to have connections work intermitently when going over bumps on the road.
