89 pu problem. Please help

After starting my 89 Toyota 22r it leaves a big black spot on the ground. It sounds like it wants to die when setting after warmed up. What could be the cause of this. Thanks in advance.

Need more info... ie How many miles? Is there black smoke? Does it seem to run good otherwise? Does it have decent power for a 22re? When was the last time you had emissions? What did those tests say?
Its carb. 22r not EFI. Smokes pretty much all the time(black smoke). Runs rougher as it warms up.
Start with the basics, replace your spark plugs, your spark plug wires, distributor cap & rotor, PCV valve, fuel filter, add some fuel system cleaner, and if need be replace your air filter too. Check for vacuum leaks. Adjust your valves and ignition timing. If it's still not running right I suggest you try either Auto-Rx or Cermax. You can search BITOG for how other's feel about these products - http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=5&page=1 Those that have actually tried these products like them.

Did this just start happening, or did you do something that caused it like vacuum lines, etc ?

I wonder if the choke is stuck ?
it pretty much started at once. I tried spraying the carb. with cleaner. Used sea foam, new air filter, new plugs and wires. The air filter is still very clean no oil on it at all.
black smoke is usually indicative of richness. get someone at a smog shop to sniff it and get back to me with the numbers of that, and I can get a better glimpse of the problem
Ok tried new plugs, plug wires, fuel filter (which looked like it really needed replaced. And I cleaned the carb. with carb. cleaner. Then when I got done started the truck let it run and warm up. Then a few hours later I started the truck up sprayed some of the vacuum hoses with carb. cleaner (looking for vacuum leak) to see if it would produce the white smoke out of the exhuast like it does when your spraying the carb. with it. And hear comes the white smoke out the exhuast. Would this be a vacuum leak? Whats the easiest way to check for vacuum leak?
White smoke is nothing more than water vapor, a normal by-product of combustion.

So your engine is running no better after replacing all those things?
when you're spraying carb cleaner on the vacuum hoses, you're looking for the idle to smooth out. A vacuum leak causes it to run rough and the carb cleaner serves to add "fuel" back into the manifold.

if white smoke is pouring out, that shows water vapor in your combustion chamber, usually a clear clue of a blown head gasket.

what is the history behind the poor running condition? any work performed immediately before?

Nice points.

Maybe the thread starter can clarify if he has 'smoke' or 'steam' coming from the exhaust ? That will help diagnose it.

I hadn't thought of a head gasket problem until this post. I assumed it was a mixture problem, or a vacuum problem. :)
what I was calling white smoke does seem to be steam. Sorry about that. I,m going to test the aap next.

that's not good paleface :(

Sounds like it's time for a head gasket before the engine grenades itself. :(

While you're at it, might as well change the timing chain and do all the other little things it needs.

Good luck, it's allot of work, but worth it for longevity !
