Hey, I've just recently bought an 89 tercel which I'm planning on putting some time in and fixing up the interior as a project. I've just put in a new deck and front speakers. The problem is that I could only mount 4 inch speakers in the front, so I basically have no bass.

I'm planning on putting some 6" x 9" speakers in the back to make up for this, but this raises a couple of problems I could use some help with.

1.) I have no idea where the left speaker connection is. This is a hatchback and there were only the front stock speakers installed. The rear speakers are connected to the deck, and I found the right rear connection (white and red) in the back of the hatchback in the space where the jack is held, but I can't find the left connection. I assumed it'd be somewhere easy to get to, like behind the little light on the left hand side of the trunk, but it's not behind there. If anyone knows where this could be it'd be great.

2.) I have no idea where to put the actual rear speakers. I could put the 6x9s in the trunk/hatch in boxes, but I worry that might destort the sound. Apart from that there's no panels or anything. I was also wondering if you think I could take the hatch panel basically the lid), cut the wood and mount them there, carpeting over again afterwords. Any advice on this one?

Thanks.

The left rear should be black (+) and yellow (-), right rear is correct, red (+) and white (-).

I highly doubt you will be able to fit 6x9s in the rear deck, due to the sheet metal that's below the rear deck, which limits the speaker sizes to either 4" or 5.25". You will have to cut the metal to fit, but if there are bars under neath, depth will be an issue. If you are really set on 6x9s, you can build 6x9 boxes and top mount them on the rear deck. Best bet is to take the rear deck off and judge for yourself.

Thanks for the tip on the 6x9s. I think I'll probably box mount them, but I've got to look into it a little more first. My main issue with the speakers is that I could only fit 4 inch speakers on the dashboard mounts. So, basically there's no base at all (quality speakers...but only four inches).

I still can't find the left rear connection at all. I've taken off the light panel on that side in the hatch and felt around, but there's nothing. There is evidence of the previous owner having taken off some of the interior panelling in the hatch, so I'll take that off and see if it slipped down somewhere.

It would make sense that there would be four speaker connections right? I'd think so because I found the right one, and if I remember correctly, all the connections were there when I set up the deck, but I have no idea why I can't find it.

If you really can't find the left rear, just run new speaker wires from behind the radio. It sounds like it had been tampered with before. The speaker wires should usually end up in a white harness. If you want bass, you can always get a 200-W amp and a 10" sub, which should suffice.
