well I just got a 90 tercel, runs like a top, but the clutch slips bad. Is there any adjustment, and if not how do you change a clutch on a front wheel drive car, in particular this one. Done lots of stuff on other cars, but never on a front wheel drive.

The first thing you'd need is a motor support for a fwd, bracket looking thing that rests on the struts and holds up the engine. Then disconnect the shifter cables and slave cylinder. Get under car, disconnect lower ball joints and pry cv axles from the tranny. Undo the speedo cable, starter and the mounts. Unbolt tranny from engine and slide out.

Goes back together in opposite form, just remember you may need a hammer to knock cv axles in. (notice I never said remove wheels nor unbolt outter cv ends)

That's the fast way.

Also, while you have the tranny out, if it's not a 5speed then get one from a salvage yard, about $300 and fits right back in place, no mods needed!

Well I'd rather have a 4 speed. I'm runnin this thing in a class at my local track called the "bumblebees". They set up cones on a 3/8 mile oval, and we race around em. Our cars are up for a claim of 350, so spendin that much on a tranny would be stupid. The fewer the gears the better any way. I run about second most of the lap. I've only been in one race so far and I was leadin, but got spun and then slammed in the drivers door by another car goin 40 or so while I was sittin still. Now that I got the door all fixed it'd be nice to be able to get on it hard comin off a corner... This little car's impressed me up to this point, and it'll only be better with a better clutch.

Would a cherry picker hold the engine up good enough, and where does the tranny slide out of? just comes out the bottom?

also, I recently had to put my cv nuckle back together on my 91 accord. When I go to put the axles back together on the tercel is it very hard. I had to work each of the little tabs to get it back together, but you're just talking about nocking it out and nocking it back in? How long does it normally take to do this because I've got a race this weekend, but I'd like to have it ready to go by then if possible. I've got the clutch disk and a haynes manual ordered, probably be here tomorrow.

when disconnecting the shift cables, is it supposed to be really really hard to get the clips off? Boy there were alot of really rusty bolts.... but I didn't break any off and finally got it all out. Hopefully it goes together easier, but I have my doubts
