Hi guys

Well I am on my 3rd toyota with the newest being a nice fully loaded 91 4X4 with the 3.0L.

For some reason I am getting a random miss every 30-50km. My 90 4Runner had a random miss every 1000 or so km, and my buddies 91 pickup has this miss every 200 or so km. What gives? Keep in mind some of these parts have 422,000km on them!!! Tried a lot of different used parts. Try swapping distributors this next weekend? Nice strong running engine, but not the best mileage right now.

Thanks

To go along with jayota's idea of running the truck at night, take a spray bottle and mist some water in the engine bay on either side, if its gonna arc, this would be the time that it will do it, this simulates the highest humidity in the engine compartment. Dont touch the wet wires however, electrons like to gather on the outside of the rubber, so even if the wires are not arcing, you could get a lil jolt!! Do it when the radiator fan isnt blowing hard, at idle.

Ensure all plug wires are secure, if plug wires are rather loose, they may even be rubbing on something (check around EGR valve), obviously this could be a problem...

Check the points under the distributor cap, if they are white, moisture is getting in (seal under dist. cap most likely at fault there). My truck would miss badly when it was raining or really foggy. Let us know what you find.

and there's been a small history of the clips on the ignition leads (spark plug wires) breaking at the distributor. You don't want those wires to back off, so make sure all your clips are in place and not broken. If not, I can send you some I have laying around.

But the miss is probably ignition related. Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter are all easy to change out culprits. Start there, then you can start looking for vacuum leaks at the intake plenum/vacuum hoses -- bad/blown gaskets or cracked/broken hoses

Interesting

I have done regular maintenance, and just looked under the cap that I replaced in Oct, and the contact points did look a little white. The only thing is this miss was happening at -25 C, and I can't see there being too much moisture in the air.

I may just change the plugs and wires again, then start looking at other possible culprits. Is it worth getting some really goo wires? The fuel filter was replaced in Oct too.

I will also try the spraying down and looking for some arcing.

Thanks guys. Love this truck, but may trade up to my dad's 99 trd.
