My 91 wagon (2 wheel drive, 440,000 km) pops out of 5th gear when cruising on the highway. Any ideas of the cure?

Funny I had an 86 honda that did that and found it was the throw out bearing.

Manual tranny though!
I am having some problems with shifting and that doesn't relate to your problem but talking to some people about trany issues i found that one fella who had the same problem as you wa sayin it was the syncros in the trany. do you get grinding puting it into reverse? because that is another sign of bad syncros(from what i hear). and i dont mean your typical 'clunk' going into reverse i mean even a slight 'grr..grr'. I dont want to disappoint but if it is your syncros its time for a rebuild or anew trany, and with 440k on a 91 the cost would sound far to much. $1100-$1600 including insall
ehh I'll rather just pay 300 for a used tranny and istalling it myself rather than pay that much...
Its possible that it is the engine mounts causing this, that happened to a friend of mine (he made me change them) so check them first or as said is could be the gearbox. Second hand gearboxes should be cheap.

could be throw out bearing (release bearing) as prophase said. I think he thinks your tranny is an auto for some reason. P.S. make sure your getting the car all the way in fifth gear :)
I'll check the motor mounts when it thaws out (-25 this morning) as the shift lever moves when I step on the gas. There is no real grinding when shifting into reverse so hopefully I don't have to change the transmission (I have a spare in the yard). Has anyone changed the shift cables?

Thanks

yea but the shifter cables dont move while the car is in gear, so i dont see why they would be a culprit here. how bout that throw out bearing?

Cure=Big Rubberband
Had that happen in an 84 Celica. It was due to wear on the 5th gear teeth. The wear created an angle that would push the gears apart with a load. It wasn't cheap to fix.
