'92 alltrac - hot start problem

Hi all,

Hoping someone might have some advice on this one. I've got a '92 alltrac, and occasionally, when it's hot, if I turn the car off, & try to start it again reasonably soon, it won't start. Doesn't turn over, nothing - if you turn the key to the start position, you don't even get a click, nothing. Battery is fine, everything else works, but no start. Bump starting the car will get it running immediately.

I could just replace the starter, but before just throwing money at it, I thought I'd check to see if anyone had any other ideas, or suggestions of things to check.

It's a common problem on all-tracs. You can take the starter apart the clean the solenoid and contacts and change the brushes, or you can just replace the starter.
Also check the clutch switch to make sure that it is depressed fully when the clutch is floored.

If you're in a bind, you can bang the starter with the tire iron. It should start then.

Well, i was going to try pulling the starter & cleaning the contacts... & then I got the flu. :-( Needless to say, climbing under a car in the cold & rain hasn't been high on my list of things to do...

No need to climb under the car.
It's on the top of the transmission.
2 bolts and 2 wires it's off.
Plus of course you have to squeeze in there to get at it.
Look under the fusebox.

Well, that's a lot easier than I expected - thanks! now I just need to find some time when it's not pouring... <sigh>. Guess I really need to clean my garage - time to put the motorcycle back together & move it.

Good news is, just got offered a vehicle hoist for $500 last night... that should make future car maintenance a lot easier.

(Yeah, not terribly relevant, but I just had to share)

Before you replace the starter, you might want to check the starter ring on the fly wheel, I had the same problem with a 1987 st165. the starter was ok but ring gear was worn, I filled of the rough edges and the problem went away, hope this helps.

Do you hear your starter relay click? (its by your left foot)

Mine is a little funky, and I have the same problem. Mostly on cold days tho.
