I've got a 93 paseo automatic, and for the past 10 months or so the torque converter hasn't been locking up, and its killing my gas mileage.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start looking for a problem, or if this is common?

any help would be appreciated.

According to the factory service manual. there are 3 things to check.

1. Electrical control system check

2. Lock-up relay valve

Refer to A244E Auto transaxle repair manual

3. Torque converter

Trash convertoer

Is the ecu on the passenger side floor board? and where is the lock up solenoid? Is it on the transmission? The wiring diagram is excellent though, wish I had it when i put the engine in.

Tranny ECU is integrated in the engine ECU. And is located behind the radio.

Lock-up solenoid is located on the transmission valve body. Drop pan, remove filter, there will be 3 solenoids with wires plugged into them. Its one of them.

honestly not having lockup shouldn't really do that much to your mpg; 2 maybe?
If you want to check it back probe the ecm with a DVOM and drive it. have a passenger check to see if the voltage goes from 0 to 12. If so the controls are ok. Check the wiring to the solenoid. If ok replace the solenoid. If you find major junk in the pan replace the trans. If ok clean out the pan and remove the screen. clean it as well and use dextron type fluid. Even better is Amsoil synthetic trans fluid.

As soon as it stops raining I'm all over it, and it actually gives me about 4 less mpg, it went from 34-36 highway to 29-32 highway. It may be the gas here in CT, but its worth it to try and fix it now with $3.29 per gallon
