I just installed my Procarparts cheap-ass MAF adaptor and filter (~$15) and let me tell you, my ass dyno says huge gains!! I couldn't believe what a significant difference this mod made on my 181K mile Camry. I just wanted to share this with my fellow Camry people..oh, and the sound=awesome..she howls like a banshee!!

what kinda gain did u get?
audible noise level?
i am curious too, i installed my CAI for the meet and during the summer it definitely makes a huge difference on the 3vz... not to mention 5 minutes ago i scared some people sitting in the left turn lane as my engine screamed at 6,000rpm. its quieter in the cabin, but MUCH louder outside.

Although you are feeling better acceleration; you will not get a huge HP gain. The setup you are using now is less restrictive than the factory airbox.

You will feel an improvement, yes; but you are still limited. With a true CAI (cold air intake), it will be better.

This is because colder air from the CAI is better for your engine than the warm air you have going in your intake from your filter/MAF adapter combo.

If you expect significant gains, then you will need to modify the head. A modified head combined with a cold air intake is a step in the right direction for improved performance.

By the way, nice site... How does the Clutchmasters Stage 3 feel on the street?

Jon, do you have a CAI on your 3VZFE? Where did you get it from?

i made mine out of pvc, spare 3" exhaust pipe, and rubber couplings from a performance store.

you are definitely right about the cold air though. cold air is more dense with oxygen than hot air is. more oxygen + more gas = greater performance.

Nice!!!!

All you installed was a cone air filter and adaptor... I hate to tell you this, but what you are experiencing is more of a placebo effect than a real gain. I doubt you even got 1 whp out of that filter. Im sure it sounds better though... But I doubt any real gains were attained.
I'ts definitely much more than just a placebo, I've been tuning around with Hondas since the late 80's and it's very rare that you make a small change such as this and actually "feel" a major difference, granted I didn't (and never will) dyno the Camry before and after, but qualitatively there is a noticeable difference in performance....the sound is sweet too though...
might've picked up a bit of power down low... probably nothing on your top end though.

I agree.....w/ a full cai, perhaps a noticeable gain...but not w/ a short ram

all you're doing is sucking in hot air if anything...

ask ricknsov's solara.....they were going to sell the car, so they put the stock airbox back in, and gained power....
i really want to dyno this and see what really happens. i have semi access to dynos. once i find a short-ram or CAI that i can borrow i'll dyno it with the help of my teachers to really see what happens.

bowlofturtle,

If you do that, I would be impressed.
Especially if you do a V6.

Put an end to CAIs vs short RAMS vs Stock box discussions forever.

Either most of us will go out and buy something or lots of wrenching and tossing crap out. Go for it.

No fair taking bribes to go either way eh.

It's an opportunity not to be missed.

Viva Le Camry..

 Me too! After driving with ram air, CAI, and short ram intake systems for like 3 years in my 3VZ, once I put on the stock stuff on, pretty gained my low end back. However, I can honestly say that the top-end wasn't all there...the car seemed like it just didn't want to move as fast over 110kph (compared to short-ram sucking in hot air). Sure you might say it was the sound of the intake giving me the placebo effect, but I don't think the butt dyno was lying on this one. I still had a dryer duct directing air from the front air damn to the filter....

Hmmm, maybe sucking in hot air isn't as relevant at higher rpm than sucking in a larger volume of air...who knows....

I second that....somebody's gotta finally put to rest the discussion about this by sticking it on a dyno.....

I've personally put to rest the discussion about the k&N filter w/ stock airbox question....did it on a dyno

Isn't this cute. Another huge gain from an intake:rolleyes:

Sound change doesn't count as added power. Let's see some dyno sheets.
I seem to remember someone boasting that they had done dyno tests to prove the gains were minimal. I would really LOVE to see these results posted. We can talk trash all day long 'til someone puts up a dyno chart!
Best $15 I ever spent..why would I spend $65 per hour on a dyno to prove if my $15 air filter makes quantitative gains? Wake up and welcome to reality...I have better things to spend money on..like my turbo ITR...:
My friend (Admiral) thought he gained a bit from the Short ram intake but last week made a CAI and he gained a shitload of torque back. All that hot air defeats the purpose unless "sound" is your purpose.
well maybe he had a REALLY dirty filter and he not basiing his finding from a clean filter but from so cloged the engeine couldnt breath. other than that search the site for everything you need to know about intakes and what not and there are lots of proven facts around here.
