i just bought a non running paseo for 200$ it turns over, gets gas and gets spark. but i can tell it recently had the timing belt changed the guy said it ran after the timing belt went but then the fuel pump went, i replaced the pump. and still no running so i checked the timing marks on it and they were set to 10 degrees so i set it back to zero so see if that would do it and still no go. Im going to try to just start it agian thismorning and see if its just flooded or hydrolocked, but does any one have any ideas? can i test the timing with a timing light when just cranking the engine (i cant check it when idling cause it wont start) Your help would make me a very happy man!

well i tried to start it again, and checked the timing marks, the 5e dot is lined up on the cam pully and the crank pully notch is at 0 degrees (is this right?) i looked it up and im pretty sure this it was it shoudl be at, and still no go. after sitting over 12 hours it shouldnt still be flooded and should fire up but i have a feeling that its somthing to do with the timing or possibly the distributor or cap, i pulled the #4 plug out and couldnt get a spark off of it for after cranking it for a bit but then i pulled all the plugs out and tested it and got a spark on all of them but it seemed like #4 wasnt firing all the time.... could be a bad ground though. can the distributor be turned 180? or does it only have 1 fixed position? This is really one of the first toyotas ive worked on and have gotten this deep into. ill probably go check out a few books on it at the library and see what to start replacing.

if #4 isnt that getting that much spark try changing the cap and the rotor that in the cap, go to a junk yard if u dont want to spend too much on the cap. the dist can only turn to a certain point, should be in the middle.

i cant belive the kind of work that was previously done on this car, there are drywall screws holding a few grounds down to the car.... i took care of the issues i could see. Later on when i go back ill check the crank marking, so far when i put the belt on ive only check the timing marking so im guessing the crankshaft is way off right now.

having trouble find a distributor for the car, but i pulled the old one took it apart and realized THIS is the problem looks like a gremlin was in there burning and tearing stuff a part. any one know a good place to buy one for a non crazy price? dealer is wanting almost double what i payed for the car. I did find a engine for 150$ at a junk yard that has 120XXX miles on it used some connections to get find it at this price, junk yard wants 125$ for just a distributor hmmm what to do?! i could probably swap the engine i a matter of 5-6 hours. Did a compression test and was seeing lower compression on one cylinder but was told it could be due to all the gas that made it into the oil. Not sure about that though. 60 psi in #4 i think.
