Run your car. Shut it off. Let it sit 5 min. Then check. That will be your reading.
95 camry v6 atf capacity

I changed the atf on a 95 camry v6 last week and I have some problem determining how much atf the auto trans takes.
When it is cold and the engine running the atf level on the dipstick is at the midpoint between the top mark of cold and lower mark of hot. I have problem reading the level when it is hot since I always got a different reading each time I check when it is hot. I hope I did not overfill it too much.
But is it normal to have the level between the top mark of cold and lower mark of hot when the trans is cold, if it is in proper level?
Second question, how much atf does it take to get the level from the low mark of hot to the high mark of hot?

No, you don't want the engine running. Same with checking oil. Running the engine splashes the oil around and gives you the wrong reading. Thats why you do it with the engine cooled, pull out the dip stick, wipe it off, put it in and pull it back out for your reading.

Correct. But for transmissions, you don't want the engine cooled.
Your reading should be of what the level is at running temp. Which is why you want to run it for a good 5,10 min before hand. And then shut it off. The fluid will settle down after about 5 min (or so) of sitting. And you will be able to get the best reading.

Automatic Transmission, Initial Fill..........3.7 quarts
Automatic Transmission, Total Fill..........7.1 quarts
Initial fill = drain & fill on tranny.
Total fill = drain all the fluid out including fluid in torque converter.

I am sorry to contradict someone (who said turn the car off for checking ATF) but every vehicle I have ever driven or owned said to check the ATF at operating temperature (hot) in park or neutral on level ground - vehicle running
